I purchased 5 of these planters and none have lasted longer than 1 year. The metal banding is the first to go; it rusts and breaks away. Once this happens the planter is destroyed. On others I've experienced the bottom rotting out so the plants fall through, as well as the lower portion of the planks crumbling away so the planter is lopsided. Wood simply does not stand up to regular watering and drying, weather extremes etc. The planters are lovely in appearance but do not last.

Matthews Redwood BT20PG Barrel Planter

I have three of these beautiful redwood planters, as well as two smaller versions and two rectangular redwood planters all made by Matthews. They have withheld their "as new" beauty through three years of direct desert sun, twice-a-day waterings from June through September when temperatures are regularly 105-115 degrees, and reaching as high as 125.

I have never used a liner, only applying a very thin layer of crushed rock to assist in drainage through the pre-cut holes. The result has been just the opposite of one other reviewer. I have never had any hint of rot through the bottom or sides. I have never had any rust or breakage of the steel bands. Through those four months of severe heat, my flowers have to be watered thoroughly twice a day, and once a day the rest of the year. Even through that "abuse," and, as I said, direct desert sunlight all year 'round, they have held up wonderfully.

The redwood planters continue to be a source of daily compliments. I am so pleased, I have ordered three more to add to the collection.
