Exercise Change
A must read! It just might change your life…

A 27 year old mother of two young children looks at herself in the mirror and smiles. Over the past year she has dramatically transformed her physical appearance after having tried and failed multiple times in the past. She isn’t worried about going back to how she used to look because this time it’s different. She has experienced a fundamental shift in the way she thinks about and reacts to change.

A recently married 30 year old retail manager feels that he is finally achieving the physique he’s always wanted. More importantly he is doing it in a way that fits with his lifestyle and for the first time in a long time he can see light at the end of the tunnel.

What do these people have in common? They succeeded in motivating themselves to exercise the ‘right way’ by learning how to effectively build, strengthen and maintain their motivation to exercise.

They succeeded by ‘exercising change’.

In Exercise Change – Build, Strengthen and Maintain Motivation to Exercise, change expert Matt Williams takes us on an introspective journey that compels us to challenge our thinking and behaviour around making exercise related changes. With an ability to translate complex psychological theories into practical and insightful narratives, Williams brings to life a whole new understanding of exercise motivation through the introduction of a new model of change, the Exercise Motivation Change Cycle or EMCC.

Along the way we learn why some people struggle to make exercise related changes, despite years of trying, while others seem to have a remarkable ability to start and stick with an exercise programme on their first attempt. We delve into the minds of behaviour change experts as well as everyday people who have accomplished extraordinary things to explore exactly how to make and maintain exercise related changes.

We discover how the right habits and mind-set were crucial to the success of nine time Coast to Coast winner Steve Gurney, Junior Mr Universe Kagan Orton and NZ cricketer Andrew Ellis. We go inside the minds of medical professionals, coaches, and martial artists and see how a well-rounded understanding of motivation and change can mean the difference between wanting to do something and actually doing it.

At its core, Exercise Change contains a refreshingly simple and empowering message: The key to exercising regularly, getting fit, losing weight, and improving health is understanding change.

Change doesn't have to intimidating. As Matt Williams shows, by harnessing much of what you probably already know and are capable of doing, we can transform our bodies, our minds, and our lives.

"This book demonstrates how powerful our minds are and helps you to understand how thoughts affect behaviour and the role this plays in making positive changes. Embracing change opens the door to opportunities and Exercise Change provides you with the resources to make things that you thought were impossible happen."
Monty Betham, former Professional Boxer, New Zealand Rugby League footballer and the Founder of the Monty Betham Steps for Life Foundation

"Many people talk about the importance of motivation and the need to change habits in the pursuit of optimal health and well-being yet very few offer real, simple and effective tools and advise for people to actually achieve this.  This book not only offers sound and practical advice to help us achieve great things but lights the spark for motivation itself.  An excellent resource and guide for anyone wanting to achieve success and for those who have stopped believing in themselves this is a must read, I believe it will change your life"
Lee-Anne Wann, Health & Fitness Specialist, Vodafone Warriors Team Nutritionist, Radio Live Health Expert, Author & Presenter

"This book covers all aspects of how to exercise change by drawing on knowledge from a wide range of elite athletes and exercise enthusiasts, all of whom have experienced success in their chosen pursuits. This information is second to none and is guaranteed to help anyone wanting to exercise change."
Kagan Orton, Mr Universe Junior (Nabba) 2013 and Mr World Junior (Nabba) 2012

I've read a lot of self help books, mainly ones to help me lose weight. After reading this book, I realised it wasn't a book about losing weight that I needed. It was the motivation to get healthy and stay healthy. I'm not normally one to write reviews, but this book made me realise I was doing it all wrong. I don't need to learn how to eat healthy, or exercise. I know that eating too much and not doing enough physical activity is the reason someone puts on weight, or fails to lose it. Reading this book has helped me understand I don't need to diet. It's taught me how to change the way I approach exercise and healthy eating. I normally stick to a diet or an exercise regime for a month at the most, but Exercise Change has made me realise it's about changing the way you think about your lifestyle. I now have the tools to help me deal with that time when I would normally give up and resort back to my old habits. After reading this book, I'm confident I will lose the weight I need to, not because it's a fad diet, but because I now realise being healthy is something you do every day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent motivator December 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Motivation is not about will power, it is about understanding and working with what fuels our won’t power! In this easy to read book Matt has usefully drawn together current theories on motivation, which can help the ambivalent or repeatedly slipping reader better reach their exercise goals. For example, he allows the reader to understand how brain function is so much more than simply ‘mind over matter’, and how through working with the brain, rather than against it, desired exercise change becomes more likely. This is simply a must read for anyone who has had the best of exercise intentions, but keeps falling short of their targets

EXERCISE CHANGE provides the reader with everything they will ever need to start and stick with any kind of fitness program or routine. The managing stages section (which makes up the bulk of the book) is divided into three easy to digest sections, these being THINK, ASK and DO. Everything youll ever need and more has been included. Also the resources that go along with this book (under the 'DO' section are a fantastic bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to finally succeed with excercise January 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Exercise change is a top-notch motivational book.

I’m not perfect. But I can improve myself. Anybody can do! But humans, we are slaves of habits. Good habits, bad habits,... habits. When we decide (especially on a New Year) to walk a new way in some area of life, our old habits typically sabotages our intents. Sounds familiar?

Matt Williams' masterpiece explains us how to succeed in the exercise area. Nevertheless, we can use same know-how from the book in just every area of our life. This is where I found even more value from Williams' book.

This book shows us clearly how our mind works and this is absolutely important to know. If you don’t, you will join the crowd whose New Year’s decision last for 5 days. Armed with the right information, only then we can act in an efficient manner.

Book explains stages that we (exercise warriors) will face on our way. Also gives us simple yet powerful tools to win our battle. One of my favorite tips from the book is “How to form a new habit in 20 seconds”.

I would like to thank the author for the book. It’s clear that he took an enormous amount of time and effort in order to put this book together. This can be anything but 5 stars book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful! December 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One only has to watch the passersby at the mall to see the undeniable truth – we don’t get enough exercise! Unfortunately for all those that start an exercise regimen, they are all too often lacking the most essential ingredient for success. Using the powerful information contained in this book, it is possible to build, strengthen and maintain that was is missing – motivation – by changing your behavior! Everything you need to think, need to ask, and need to do is contained in this insightful and highly effective book. I plan on keeping this title permanently on my Kindle! Great job!
