Using this with my Mac Pro I noticed that the microphone of my headset gave no detectable signal. I discovered that this is because the "Line In" port of my computer is not actively powered, making it unsuitable for passive mics. Therefore, if your mic is silent, read the specs of your machine to determine whether it has a powered microphone port. Some PCs have both a "Mic" and a "Line In" port, but ports labeled "Line In" are often unpowered. In any case, the silence is almost always not the cable's fault.

The solution for machines without powered audio jacks is simply to find a sound card that has one. The simplest and most compatible option is a USB Audio adapter such as the Logitech USB To 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter. For audio buffs, the investment in a headphone amp might be more worthwhile, such the excellent FiiO E10 USB DAC Headphone Amplifier or the affordable ASUS Xonar U3 Sound Cards (XONAR_U3/UAD/B/A). Almost any internal sound card (PCI / PCI-E) will also work; make sure it has a "Mic In" port and not just a "Line In".

On my computer, and most computers, especially desktops, you have a green headphone jack and a red microphone jack. If you have a pair of headphones with an inline microphone built in you cannot use both capabilities without this adapter. Since the plug on the headphones/mic can only plug into one jack, this adapter splits the audio and recording capabilities of said headphones for use on computers with these separate audio and mic jacks.

It works great, it's simple, very plug and play. Additionally, you can connect regular 3.5 mm audio line extenders into each the green and red male plugs of the adapter to extend the length of the adapter to your computer.

Product works perfect with my Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones on my pc. Bought these for use of voice chat while gaming to get that high quality sound that you expect from a Bose product. Headset sound quality is so much better than the traditional gaming headsets and this adapter allows me to use it. I'm very happy.

It allows me to use my Bose MIE2i headset for gaming on my computer. The sound quality is the same as plugging it right into the jack.

I purchased this so that I can use the headset that came with the iPhone 5 for Skype and RingCentral calls on a Windows 7 PC. The speaker portion worked just fine, no issues at all. However, the microphone did not work at all and I was never able to find a workaround. I plan on sending this back for a refund unless I can find a fix.

I took a chance on this over the much more expensive "Headset Buddy" brand and it works just fine. Using it with my Skullcandy Lowrider headphones with built-in microphone. The only "tricky" part was making sure to remember that the plugs are color-coded for a reason: green is for audio, red is for the mic.

The item does not work. Earphones used were stock Apple iPhone earphones with microphone and the Ultimate Ears 500vi. Audio works, microphone does not. Microphone level on my laptop are at 100% and I used microphone boost settings of +0, +10, and +20 dB. The only sound I could get out of the microphone is the clicking of the buttons. Nothing else from the microphone works.

I can now use the Microphone for the headset I bought. However, I had to mess with the settings on my desktop computer. It would show there was a line connected, but no one could hear me speaking. So I had to increase the Microphone and Microphone Boost Levels to the max. Once I did that, it seemed to work fine.It is in the Control Panel\Sound\Recording Tab\highlight the Microphone\Properties\Levels tab. Ran two tests (via Skype) and it worked fine.
