Largely superfluous., April 13, 2005

Generally, I'm not one for remix albums, and I think thats largely influenced my take on this. Mick Karn's "Each Eye a Remix" is exactly that, remixes of songs from "Each Eye a Path" by such lumenaries as David Torn, Claudio Chianura, Yoshihiro Hanno, Paul Wong, Richard Barbieri and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Now again, I'm not really one for remix albums, for the most part, I don't feel that they add to the original much-- to remix sucessfully, one has to be able to overlay one's own vision upon a piece whilst remaining true to the original, and this is a difficult thing. Simply adding beats and synthesizers here and there doesn't do it for me.
There are of course exceptions, and as such exceptional remixes and some of the tracks on here do qualify-- Paul Wong's rearrangement of "Latin Mastock" as "Hong Kong Mastock", with some great strings, a killer beat, and a much improved arrangement that I think displays the mood of the piece better than the original. Barbieri's "Angel's in the Asylum" is another good additive remix, taking the aggressive "Angel's Got a Lotus" and making it funky and unique.
Some of the other stuff is somewhat interesting as well-- Torn does a good job marrying songs together for the opener ("The Never Forgotten Night We met the Puppeteer"), but falls short at his second attempt ("Puppeteer Night"), Claudio Chianura's "Knowledge Suspended" is really quite good, but bears no resemblance to any of Karn's work-- again, losing sight of the original artist's sound causes the remix to fail, and Hanno's "Re-Nil" (a remix of the brilliant "Up to Nil" sounds like it came off their collaborative album "Liquid Glass"-- the focus on the lyrics does permit an easier appreciation of them, but it still doesn't feel like a Karn piece.
In the end, this is probably not essential-- if you're a Karn fan, check it out, if you're curious, try the original this was remixed from ("Each Eye a Path"), its quite a record.

the rice song, December 6, 2004

why do we evenput up with mr. karn? could it be he might per chance surprise? yes and no. stop searching and be . i know that sounds cryptic. the rice song understates a cosmic thread...attached to him, holding him here...on earth.
how did a black guy from the hood get to hear a new romantic stumble on to a sound that is close to ephereal? okay...JAPAN RULES!!!
i'm not gay.
