Nearly all airlines say that their carry-on requirements are 22x14x9, so nearly all bag manufacturers say their bags are 22x14x9. It's not true in practice, and I've seen airlines with full flights get very picky about bags being able to fit in the box. I went to a local store with measuring tape in hand to check out the three Eagle Creek lines they carry. The Tarmac 22" was my favorite bag as far as features, but its depth was 11" without the extension being unzipped. That was with a pillow loosely stuffed in it for display, not jam-packed for travel. The ORV Trunk 22" was also 11" deep at a minimum. The SWIFT 22" was the only model of the three that actually conformed to regulation size. What I liked about all three was that they were very lightweight, and rolled in a steady and balanced manner. I did find all three to be a little sticky or difficult when trying to push the telescoping handle back down.
