Book Description

Fiona, Hap, Billy, and Mitch make an odd set of friends, as different from the usual junior high school crowd as they are from each other.

Mitch, the oldest of the four, is a half-breed Native American, adopted by white parents. Troubled that he doesn't know his tribe, he avidly studies Native American history and lore. Learning the nearby Bear Valley Wildlife Refuge is a bald eagle nesting site, he wants to add an eagle feather to his medicine bag and explore the refuge as a site for his Vision Quest, a Native American rite of passage. He and his three friends get far more than an overnight camp out as they encounter a black bear, a retired forest ranger living in the refuge, and a pair of eagle poachers. Bringing the poachers to justice, they test their courage and gain confidence in themselves and each other. Approx. 38K words.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Great Read!! May 2, 2010
Format:Paperback
I just finished this book and WOW what a good time I had!

Everyone who knows me know that my attention span is of a gnat! My ADHD gets the best of me and sitting down is not an easy task. This book kept my attention and in my seat wanting to know what is going to happen next!

The Bald Eagle is a bird I admire and respect. I think it is fantastic for a writer such as Marva Dasef to put her talents to GREAT use to help get the word out about this beautiful bird and what is happening to its survival! The aspect of poaching is very real here in our beautiful state of Oregon, as it is in your state as well I bet.

Bald Eagles are not seen everywhere like they are here though. Only a couple states citizens can say they have these great birds flying over head as they drive down the road!! Our state is only one of few who can say this!

Not only is the protection of the Bald Eagle within this story by Marva Dasef. There is who I feel is the main character of this book; a young Native American man trying to find his own identity, searching for who he is.

Being given up for adoption by his sick Native American mother and adopted by a childless couple. He searches for who he is with the help of his new friends here in the state of Oregon where his parents moved him too. Being new to the school and being picked on by the school bullies. Mitch is befriended by a small group of friends. These friends will prove to be the best friends Mitch has ever had.

These four friends go onto a National Park where Bald Eagles gather and nest. The young adults run into a cranky, some say crazy old man who with his gun runs these kids away from his remote cabin which was built on the edge of this Park with no electricity and no running water.

4.0 out of 5 stars A contemporary adventure story May 8, 2011
Format:Paperback
This book does a great job describing rural Oregon life and both environmental and social issues. The educational aspect of the novel however does nothing to dampen the action. Plenty of excitement and adventure awaits the characters on their eagle quest. I grew up reading outdoor adventure novels like this and enjoyed both the lively characters and the setting. I also found the informational guide in the back of the novel interesting and informative. It would work well with a book club or using the novel in a classroom.
