Good deal. Defective models are common; figures-- they keep price down because they don't check them properly before they ship out. Didn't cost me a thing to swap it for a working model (using amazon's returns dept.)

If you don't mind the risk of return time then get this--- oh, and try copying a 100gigs to it and wear it in a bit so you can see if there is something wrong with it.

I've bought higher end stuff and had it be defective-- you can't avoid the gamble, its just that odds are a bit higher on this one.

Other than this, the thing works really nicely and looks really nice.

I bought this along with a terabyte internal drive. It works great, looks good, and runs cool. What more could you ask for.

This external enclosure was a good price. Also it is low profile and looks good with the black mesh enclosure. However, there are a couple things preventing this from being a great product:

1. Installation is difficult. It requires two different screwdrivers to remove the panels and secure the HDD to the internal chassis. It also requires removal of both sides to access the internals. Panel screws were pretty weak and not philips-head; I almost stripped one on them because of the slotted head. However, they were thoughtful enough to add one of each kind in case they were lost or damaged.

2. The LED indication light is in the back of the enclosure. I would prefer it be in the front as it sits with the cords and such in the back. They could have remedied this but putting the led more toward the top; with the mesh panels it would have easily shown even if it was kept in the back.

3. The stand for putting it on its side was too wide for my tastes; it looked a bit shaky on its side. I just kept it flat on my desk.

However,the most important thing was that it actually worked and let me provide back up space for my computer's data, so I am willing to overlook these shortcomings. I hate to nitpick especially with the price but they almost have a great product on their hands.

First for the pros:

The enclosure's size is just about right, not too big, fits any common hard drive. It features pretty good ventilation without concealing whats inside. It has status leds and an On/Off switch (a very important feature, believe it or not).

For the cons:

It shouldn't take that many screws to get a new drive installed. With this unit you have to remove eight screws, attach the drive with the classical 4 then put back the eight screws. Also you require a flathead and a phillips screwdrivers (at least it doesn't have torx screws). It's still easy to setup, but it shouldn't feel like a project.

The other thing is, we are in the year 2010 and I can't believe I got one of these good for nothing, bulky power supplies. Those things use too much room and don't fit properly on a basic power strip. They should be banned.

In conclusion, I'm satisfied with my purchased but there is room for improvement.

Worked perfectly. I choose this product over other because it said it could handle my 1TB drive. It was exactly what I needed.

Pros: Looks great in pictures, and has vents to cool off the drive.

Cons: Looks horrible in real life, and it takes forever to install the drive.


This product looks great in pictures, but horrible in real life. I was ready to slip that past, and tried to install a hard drive in it.

It took forever to install the hard drive. First of all it takes forever to get the sides off the enclosure it self, and on top of that the enclosure is secured with multiple amount of screws.

When installing on Windows 7 and Vista, it didn't recognize it right away. I had to manually go into computer management and add the drive from there. Very impractical!!! I would recommend getting a Vantec NexStar 3, that's what I have now.

The only reason I gave this product 3 stars is because of Amazon's great customer service. They took the product back and refunded my money and paid for the shipping charges as well. IMHO Amazon is the best online shopping store ever period.

I use this enclosure with my Hitachi 1TB drive and it works great. I used it for my PC/Wii/Xbox 360 and they all recognize the drive with the enclosure. This is a great enclosure to convert an internal drive to an external.

Received the unit today. Had a drive in it in under 10 minutes, quite satisfied with how secure the drive is inside of the enclosure. Setup the stand sponges too. Hooked it up, turned it on, worked fine. Immediately began moving over 200 gigs from the drive in the enclosure to my hard drive. Took about an hour, and no errors, no pauses, no stops, despite playing WoW and browsing Facebook at the same time. Once I get all of my music moved to the internal drive, I will be using it to backup my Wii games. Perfect!
