About Eagles Nest Outfitters
Brothers Peter and Paul Pinholster opened Eagles Nest Outfitters after embarking on a cross-country adventure in the summer of 1999. The pair had set up shop in their sister's garage sewing hammocks and slap straps, with the goal of traveling the East Coast selling their products at music festivals and community gatherings. They initially lived out of their seen-better-days mini van while building a thriving business. While vending at festivals along the Appalachian Trail, a friend suggested they set up permanent shop in Asheville, North Carolina. I purchased this hammock for all my future outdoor trips after doing extensive research on every company who makes/ sells hammocks. Some people might prefer to buy a system that is "all-inclusive" (i.e. - with bug net and rainfly attached). I'm not one of those people. I prefer to have control of what I pack depending on the journey. I was hoping to try it out in the wilderness first, but as luck would have it the family reunion that I'm currently on took priority. I think everyone in the family thought I was crazy for bringing it up to Minneapolis since we'd be at a condo (instead of outdoors and closer to trees). However, the patio area has two perfectly spaced columns that have worked out well! Every evening I'll set it up in a matter of minutes, lay in and just watch the stars till I fall asleep.

The hammock itself is a perfect size with more than enough room to spare (I'm 5'10" and around a buck 90). Others have complained that this hammock is too restraining. It's a travel hammock...not a king size bed or one of those hammocks that come with a metal frame. The material, cord, biners and overall construction of the hammock are top notch! I looked at the slap straps that ENO sells and instead of spending an extra $20 for the straps, I just purchased two lengths of climbers webbing at 1 in x 9 feet each for a total cost of $3.45. I would advice this for others who are buying this hammock or any hammock in lieu of pre-made straps. A simple bowline or waterknot with some backup ties does the trick and you can set the connection loop where you want instead of where the manufacturer has sewn it in. That is another issue I had with the pre-made slap straps. Eventually, the stitching for the sewn loops will fray due to exposure to the elements and use.... I'd rather spend my money on other gear.

The third party I purchased the hammock from (Goliath) rocks! I got it a day earlier than expected. I would definitely buy from them again! Read more ›

This thing is amazing! I have it hanging on my back patio and love using it. When pack up its smaller than a football and light weight. Left it out in the rain the other night and it was dry by morning. Feels exactly like a parachute. I am 5'6" and around 200 lbs... not a little girl...and this thing works great for me. Plenty of room but it is a single. I would not attempt to put another person in it with me even if I was lighter and we would be under the weight limit. It's just not made for two.

Pros: Very compact, great design, super comfortable, slick and convenient. Also, sets up in five minutes with pretty much no hassle.

Cons: Very thin nylon, but seems durable. Sleeps kinda goofy because it squeezes your shoulders inward.

Overall: Amazing item, no complaints at all. Carabiners are high quality and paracord is tough.

Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest Hammock is my first venture into the world of hammock use for backpacking. Right up front I will say that I really like this hammock and am very impressed with its easy set up and how comfortable it is to sleep in. My first time hanging this hammock took less than five minute using Kammok Python Straps. Hanging this hammock was way faster than any tent that I have put up over the years. The only faster option might be a bivy but a bivy is not near as comfortable as a hammock. From now on when camping or backpacking I will be using a hammock when possible.

Pros:

+ Lightweight
+ Compact
+ Comfortable
+ Easy to set up (less than 5 minutes)
+ Can sleep on your side
+ Side pocket attached to hammock to store items
+ Integrated stuff sack
+ Variety of colors available
+ Material appears durable (time will tell)
+ Holds up to 400 pounds

Cons:

- Carbineer has some sharp edges
- Does not come with straps to hang the hammock
- Sways for a while when you first get in (might not be an issue for some)

Tips:

1. Use a pad or other form of insulation if in cold/cool weather. Obviously a hammock is not designed for winter but in cold or cool weather you must use a pad to insulate you from the cold. If you fail to do this you will lose body heat and get cold during the night. I was using a Marmot Hydrogen 30 Degree Sleeping Bag and got cold the first night in temperature of only 45 degrees. I put a Thermarest Ridge Rest Solar Sleeping Pad in and problem solved. Do not underestimate the need for having some type of pad or insulation beneath you.... The Thermarest Ridge Rest Solar Sleeping Pad that I was using fit perfectly in the hammock. It moved around just a little in the hammock but not very much.

2. Do not use nylon hammock straps as they stretch. A better choice is polyester straps which will not stretch. There are many choices available but I went with Kammok Python Straps. Each strap is made of UV treated polyester tubular webbing with 18 attachment points and is capable of holding 250 pounds for a total of 500 combined pounds. At a weight of 1 pound these are not the lightest straps but there is good weight and bad weight. These straps are good weight. The Python Straps are very simple, fast, and easy to apply. They are strong, durable, and reliable.

3. Depending on your needs the following might be a "Pro" or a "Con" in relation to your hammock. The Eagles Nest Outfitters SingleNest Hammock does not come with straps, bug net, or a tarp. This is not a complete "integrated" system. For some this may be a problem while others will like the ability to pick and choose individualized components as opposed to getting a "system" that may not completely meet your needs. Individual components provide you with more flexibility in your set up typically at the expense of more weight and bulk.

Good:
* Very thin material (packs to less than the size of a 32oz nalgene & very light)
* Comfortable (I am 6'4" 220lbs)
* Simple set up
* Cheapest pre-made hammock I could find
* attached stuff sack is a nice touch

Bad:
* Some of the sewing on the ends of the hammock has started to pull out after 4-5 uses
* Gathered ends sometimes slip off ropes when packed and need slid back over

My only real concern is the sewing. It has not seemed to cause any problems yet. I burned the loose threads with a lighter to hopefully stop the unraveling. I would advise one to practice setting it up before taking it out. Also another con for hammocks in general is that they do not keep a layer of air around you like a tent. So in colder months or if you are a cold sleeper you will need extra equipment to stay warm.
