Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reSchool-Grade 1-An upbeat, encouraging story about an eaglet's development from the egg to his first flight. His fear of leaving the warmth and security of the nest for the endless blueness of the world beyond captures some of the feelings that young children experience when venturing outside the home for the first time. Gabriel's impressive full-color illustrations, some, two-page spreads, successfully reflect Eaglet's anxiety and, later, his mastery of flight. The constant support and reassurances from his parents add to the relevance of the story for young children.

From Booklist

Ages 4-7. Before he's born, Eaglet is quite comfortable in his egg. One day, however, he feels crowded, so he reluctantly pushes out into the nest. The nest, too, is very comfortable, and Eaglet resolves to stay there. One day, however, he starts to feel crowded again. This time his parents push him out--into the sky and the beautiful world beyond. Much of the metaphor about growth and change is likely to go over the heads of younger children, but Gabriel's artwork is attractive, and it has a natural feel that suits the simple story. Information about bald eagles and the problems they currently face is provided in an afterword that has been written for adults, but the facts presented will prove interesting to children as well as to those who read to them. 5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Soar, March 23, 2011
This review is from: Eaglet's World (Paperback)
Forever...forever...Those are Eaglet's thoughts from the time he describes being inside his egg all the way through his soaring flights. What a wonderful story! Beautiful illustrations help the young reader "see" how the bird looks inside an egg, how the nest becomes too small for everyone, how the eaglet's feathers fluff up in the wind, and how the world might look from an eagle's view. Stunning!

Eaglet describes many of life's lessons. He wishes each comfortable step of his life would stay the same forever. Then he realizes his life needs to change and he finds out the next step is wonderful too. The lessons ring true for everyone and are explained clearly even to a younger reader. This is a book to be read on many different levels and is worth every one of them.

This review is from: Eaglet's World (Hardcover)
Eaglet's World is a wonderful book about both the hatching of an eaglet, and what it might feel like to "launch" out into the world. Children and adults can relate to this idea, as well as become informed about the birth to flight life of an eagle! Grand illustrations as well and memorable story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated look at an eagle family, November 16, 2003
This review is from: Eaglet's World (Hardcover)
"Eaglet's World" is written by Evelyn Minshull and illustrated by Andrea Gabriel. The book tells the story of a baby eagle--from his time inside the egg, to hatching, and to his first flight.

The lovely text has an appealing poetic rhythm. And it's superbly complemented by the joyous, beautiful illustrations. Overall, a children's book that effectively celebrates and educates about the beauty of nature.
