5.0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't Fly Without These Ever Again
Excellent product, worth every penny, safe and convenient.

I've suffered many years with ear pain while flying.

I tried everything else that I'd heard to ease the discomfort.

Nothing ever worked.Typcially I would arrive at my destination and would have earaches and "cloudy" hearing. This would go away right about the time I was ready to take...

Excellent product, worth every penny, safe and convenient.

I've suffered many years with ear pain while flying.

I tried everything else that I'd heard to ease the discomfort.

Nothing ever worked.Typcially I would arrive at my destination and would have earaches and "cloudy" hearing. This would go away right about the time I was ready to take my return flight and start all over again.

So I thought I would try these. They are easy to use. They work by sealing off the inner ear from the pressure flucuations within the cabin. They seal very tight! They come a pair to a box, with a little plastic tube to store them in.

I found it a little difficult to put them back in the storage tube. This is good, however, they are still working properly.

You need to put them in before the door is closed and can remove them once the plane reaches highest alltitude. This is usaully when the captain turns off the seatbelt sign and they begin snack/meal service. The directions say to reinsert them an hour before landing. I just kept them in so I didn't forget.

One drawback is that they reduce your hearing level if you leave them in the entire flight. You may not be able to hear annoucements or the flight attendants instrucions.

I found myself talking too softly as I was trying to overcompensate for not being able to hear myself. Also headphones may not be an option,I didn't try. Not being able to hear others around me was a blessing for me as I was able to sleep soundly.

I squish them and pull on the top of my ear to get them in good and I wear them for the first hour until I am we are done ascending. Then when it gets near to going down I put them in again. The trick is to get them in early. Any kind of descent will make my ears hurt immediately. Anyways for my last flight I bought these earplanes thinking they would be even better then earplugs and no way. They didnt work at all. I got pain right away and had to take them out and get my old trusty earplugs. If you are nervous you should wear the plugs throughout the whole flight but if its a long flight then it should be okay to take them out once you are up and level. Hope this helps!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable, but they work!, October 1, 2009

My ears/sinuses are extremely sensitive to pressure changes. I use these EarPlanes when we fly. They definitely work. The biggest problem for me is that they are so painful to leave in my ears. The hard rubber ridges are not comfortable. After about 30 minutes I just want to rip these out of my ears. But, they are the only product that definitely works, so I put up with it.

I also use the "Flents Flitemate" brand of ear air pressure plugs. The Flents are much, much more comfortable. But, for me, they do not work as well for significant pressure changes. So, I may use my Flents during takeoff, but I ALWAYS use my EarPlanes for descent. Or, if I have more sinus congestion than normal, I would use EarPlanes.

By the way, if you are new to using EarPlanes for ear air pressure regulation -- you do not necessarily need to leave the plugs in during the entire flight. Just put them in at take off and keep them in until you reach cruising altitude. Then you can take them out. But, if you notice turbulence or the pilot saying they need to go down for a bit, put the plugs back in until the cruising stabilizes again. And, of course, put them back in as soon as the plane starts its descent. Of course, everyone had different sinuses, so you may need to leave them in the entire flight. But, for me, they are so painful to leave in I have to compromise.

Oh, also -- I use the EarPlanes over and over forever (until I lose them). I have never noticed a problem from re-using them.

Overall, I highly recommend this product. A must if you have sinus/ear issues. Buy these and a pair of the more comfortable Flents Flitemates and you are set.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, June 5, 2011

I also bought a pair of these and used them on my last trip. While they worked for the most part, they were not as good as the foam ones like the flight attendants give you. Additionally, they are so rigid they don't shape to your ear the way the foam ones do. Thus, they fall out more easily and I don't like putting something in my ear that's been on the floor. Just not a good value for the price, in my opinion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ditto for big 3: flonase, afrin, sudafed. So-so for earplanes., December 28, 2010
This review is from: EarPlane Air Pressure Regulating Ear Plugs- Adult (Health and Beauty)
I suffer from skull-cracking pain as much as anyone I know. Had to be carted off a plane once after landing, having nearly passed out from the pain and unable to stand up.

What I've found is the same as what Dan Kaufman suggests (having gotten my advice from a noted allergist). Use flonase (Fluticasone) for several days to a week prior to the flight, squirt Afrin before takeoff, and take sudafed. Since sudafed works within about 30 minutes and afrin is almost immediate, you can time these accordingly.

If you're still having trouble, another method which I've tried and which may help is to ask the flight attendant for steaming hot water poured on a paper towel, which you stuff at the bottom of a styrofoam cup. Make two of these cups and hold them against your ears. The heat will help loosen the blockage and improve airflow. You won't win any beauty contests, but if you're in pain, you won't care.

Of course, bring along a couple packs of gum.

Do the earplanes work? I really don't know. I keep using them, but without question, Flonase, Afrin, Sudafed, and chewing gum are the most important ingredients.

1.0 out of 5 stars heres what finally worked for me, April 9, 2009
This review is from: EarPlane Air Pressure Regulating Ear Plugs- Adult (Health and Beauty)
I have bad problems with decent during flying, as my Eustachian tubes don't open. Ive tried gum, drinking liquid, yawning, pinching my nose, blowing to clear my ears, Sudafed, afrin and these earplane plugs.
After consulting with an ear, nose and throat specialist, I took 3 drugs, and didnt have any ear problems on my recent flights:
1) Fluticasone--this is a prescribed corticosteroid nasal drop, which you need to start taking a few days before flying--corticosteroids are not good to take systemically (orally), but local application doesn't have significant side effects. Ask your Dr. for a prescription with 3 refills, so you can get more later.
2) Afrin--this is an over-the-counter nasal spray decongestant that acts 10 hrs--take it before take-off. This has Oxymetazone hydrocloride. Be caureful buying nasal sprays with other brand names, as many use pseudophadrine, which I took orally (below)
3)Sudafed --take a full 60 mgs 3 hours before landing (this is pseudophadrine HCL--it can only be obtained by asking for it behind the pharmacy counter and signing for it because it can be used to make crystal meth-the new stuff that replaced it has a very similar name, and is sold over the counter doesn't work as well, and is not what you want)
4) chewing gum and blowing to clear ears (gently for about 10 seconds) can help. These earplane plugs are not useful.
good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, August 3, 2011
This review is from: EarPlane Air Pressure Regulating Ear Plugs- Adult (Health and Beauty)
Everytime I flew I would have the most excruciating ear/head pain when descending. I tried it all. My doctor had recommended I tried these, as well as use a nasal decongestant spray before I flew. In doing so, I found this product to have change my flight experience forever. I had no pain whatsoever, and found them pretty comfortable to wear as well. I kept them in the whole time, in fear of experiencing any amount of the agony I usually go through. Not sure if using the nasal spray helped. I bought an over the counter spray, used it 12 hours before my flight, and again 2 hours before my flight.

If you like to try this out, order it online from Walmart. It is $3.97 plus your state tax and free delivery to your home. I just ordered a pair and could not believe the price difference. $4.28 vs $10.98.

5.0 out of 5 stars EarPlane Saviors, December 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: EarPlane Air Pressure Regulating Ear Plugs- Adult (Health and Beauty)
I ALWAYS have trouble with the air pressure when taking an airplane trip. A few years ago I discovered this product in a children's product catalogue. They also offered adult sizes and I ordered a pair. The EarPlane plugs have now made flying for me very easy - no extreme popping in the ears, no "pins" in the sinus area. I cannot imagine flying without them.
