5.0 out of 5 stars My 5 yr. old son knows what composting is!, February 1, 2010
This review is from: Earl The Earthworm Digs for His Life (Hardcover)
I work for a non-profit and purchased the Earl book at our store to read to my two children. It became an immediate favorite. My 5 yr. old asks for the book by name-always saying, "I want to read the Earl book!" The colorful pages were engaging with really amazing and interesting facts about worms and compsting at the bottom of the pages. At the very end was a guide to composting. My children and I are now composters as a result of this book! How many 5 yr. olds know what composting is? This book reaches very young readers and interests them in the natural world by fostering appreciation for one of the most ignored, but one of the most important species- WORMS!

4.0 out of 5 stars Learning to think big!, January 22, 2010
This review is from: Earl The Earthworm Digs for His Life (Hardcover)
I want my kids to grow up having fun and developing a bond with nature by spending time in it. It's also important that they grow up understanding how nature works and it's not easy finding entertaining stories for early readers that deliver a message about ecology. So, with that intro, I recommend Earl the Earthworm! Earl's a worm that knows he's not like the bees, or ants, grasses or trees. It's not until he begins to dig does he understand all the good he does- just by his wriggling and eating. Through the story we learn of the connections in nature- that each part of nature has an important role to play in the success of the whole.

And now whenever I'm in the garden, my son comes out to dig in the dirt and hunt for Earl the Earthworm! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Earl Entertains and Educates!, October 13, 2009

This review is from: Earl The Earthworm Digs for His Life (Hardcover)
Earl the Earthworm, along with Magner's other eco-conscious titles, is a great learning tool for children of all ages. With dual narration in the book, one at an elementary level, one at a higher level, this book can be used across grade levels. The stunning illustrations are a beautiful compliment to the text, and really help students understand all the amazing things going on under our feet. Showing students the interconnectedness of all things on earth is not only an important lesson in the classroom, but for all of us in our daily lives. People of all ages can learn a thing or two from Earl.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiration, July 29, 2009
This review is from: Earl The Earthworm Digs for His Life (Hardcover)
My son, the budding environmentalist, was inspired by a book to ask for a very unusual birthday present. Last November, Tim Magner of Green Sugar Press contacted me about the possibility of some sort of collaboration with my Chicago-based non-profit, Purple Asparagus [...]. About a month later, I received a package with Magner's three books, "N is for Nature," "An Environmental Guide from A to Z" and "Earl the Earthworms Digs for His Life." My son was fascinated by the book. After I explained the idea of a worm bin, he asked for one for his birthday.
