Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-While both of these series entries effectively introduce their subjects, they are uneven. Any feelings or thoughts expressed come from opinions written by the justices while on the court, or, in the case of Warren, platforms chosen while in politics. Although Herda tries to simplify the information for those without previous knowledge, the presentations are at times monotonous and dry. Also, there are unusual gaps in the O'Connor book. Much detail is provided about her paternal grandfather, her parents and their courtship, her schooling in El Paso; but then one chapter ends with her acceptance to Stanford and the next begins with her attending law school. Readers are told the name of her elementary school, but not her major in college. There are many titles about O'Connor available, so librarians may want to review them before considering this one. Both books have good-quality black-and-white photos.-Linda Gray, Tyler Public Library, TX
