Book Description

January 9, 2008
The Earl's Comeuppance By Phylis Warady A Confirmed Bachelor For nigh forty years, the Earl of Pardo has managed to escape the parson's mousetrap. Nor does he have the least intention of being led meekly to the altar anytime soon if ever! A Wily Widow In Margaret Astell's opinion, the Earl of Pardo is arrogant, conceited and disturbingly attractive. By rights, he has no business meddling in the affairs of a respectable widow bent on seeing her eldest daughter properly wed. The Plot Thickens To ensure his proud lineage, the Earl feels he must take steps to protect his dashing, romantically inclined heir from the fortune-hunting snares of Mrs. Astell's pretty daughter. But when the affair is resolved to his satisfaction, to his amazement, the suave Earl finds he's fallen in love.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Warady's second novel (the first was Scandal's Daughter , Walker, 1990) makes enjoyable reading. A widow and her five children travel to London for the season. The mother, Margaret, hopes to find a suitable husband for her eldest daughter Henrietta. As their paths cross with Margaret's sister-in-law, an elitist earl, his nephew, and a mischievous publisher, the plot acquires depth and intrigue. (Of course, love wins out in the end--twice.) Warady appears to have researched the colloquialisms and fashions of early 19th-century London quite thoroughly; this adds much to the tone of her novel. A good addition to general romance collections, this novel will also appeal to many YA readers given the ages of several characters and its shorter length. This light, historical romance with some substance is definitely recommended.

Review

"Ms. Warady writes with a basic ease and flair that make her a talent well worth watching."

3.0 out of 5 stars Regency valley girls, April 2, 2009

This review is from: The Earl's Comeuppance (Paperback)
The plot isn't bad, but the author uses so much Regency-era slang and cant plucked from Georgette Heyer's novels that the dowagers and mature gentlemen sound more like their era's equivalent of Valley Girls.
