Editorial Reviews

Gold has had an almost mystical allure throughout the ages. It was treated as a substance from God by the ancient Egyptians and has been used as a source of money and adornment for millenia. Even today it is a very special metal. Its color and heaviness mark it as special when you look at it or hold a gold coin in your hand. It is even still used as money - although not officially - by many people trading amongst themselves and many people still buy it as an inflation hedge or investment or anti-apocalypse reserve against the collapse of civilization and paper money. So where does gold come from? And how it is refined and purified into the grades that are suitable for making coins or jewelry? This DVD will look at a major gold mining operation in South Dakota in 1940 and an unbelievable but true gold rush in Ohio in 1933 as shown in a brief 30 second newsreel clip from that era.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gold mining video may not be what you want?, January 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Early 20th Century Gold Mining Films on DVD - Prospecting, Gold Rush, Smelting and More (DVD)
Although the very brief description on this video is correct, most of the information is outdated. If you are interested in the old, large scale mining operations from removing the ore to processing the ore this video is for you. If you are looking for a more modern, post 1970, approach to prospecting, gold processing, and smelting this video will be a waste of your money. For the modern gold prospector there are much better videos on the market by Keene Engineering as well as many free videos on Youtube. Happy hunting!
