From Publishers Weekly

DePaola begins with a historical note that surely will intrigue children: in Colonial New England, the celebration of Christmas was shunned in many villages. He depicts the arrival of a German family into one such town, showing their careful, loving preparations. Their efforts begin in autumn, when bayberries are picked and candles made; they continue throughout the fall, until apples are dried and strung, cookies and pretzels are baked, "hearts of man" and other paper ornaments are snipped and, finally, candles are lit in every window. This provides a fascinating look at Christmas as it once was: a holiday whose customs were entwined with the season's natural bounty. The emphasis is on the joys of preparation and of quiet, heartfelt observance; refreshingly, gift-giving is not a concern. This is a warm and beautifully realized tribute to the spirit and traditions of the season. Ages 4-8.

More About the Author

"Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.
It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.
He names Fra Angelico and Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as major influences on his work, but he soon found his own unique style. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his ""singular attainment in children's literature,"" the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his ""continued distinguished contribution,"" and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration.
Tomie dePaola has published almost 200 children's books in fifteen different countries. He remains one of the most popular creators of books for children, receiving more than 100,000 fan letters each year.
Tomie lives in an interesting house in New Hampshire with his four dogs. His studio is in a large renovated 200-year-old barn.
- He has been published for over 30 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Colonial Christmas, December 6, 1999
By
Joan Tuss (Billings Montana) - See all my reviews
I thought this was a winner. The book focuses on the difference one family made on the Christmas traditions in a New England Village. The family works tirelessly to decorate their house for the Christmas holidays. This culminates in a beautiful candle lit tree and windows on Christmas. The beautifully stylized illustrations show in simplistic detail the work that they do to celebrate the Holiday. This story captivated me and all of the children in my daughter's third grade class. I hope you have a chance to enjoy this one and get back to the basic joys of Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Illustrations and Meaningful Christmas Message, July 21, 2009
This charming book is the story of one family's Christmas preparations (hand dipping candles, baking mounds of delectable cookies, crafting moravian stars, carving nativity pieces, decorating with evergreens and more)all in a charming New England style of times past. It focuses on family and the message of Christmas as opposed to focusing on one's self or getting mounds of gifts. The artwork is truly beautiful. This is a classic book that will be treasured for years to come. Worth buying in hardcover if you can find it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Christmas book about German traditions, December 22, 2008
By
This review is from: An Early American Christmas (Hardcover)
We love Tomie DePaola. My daughter (age 5) and I have read about 6 of his books. My step-daughter (now 17) introduced me when she was a girl with her copy of "The Knight and the Dragon". My favorites by this author are in the Strega Nona series but this was pretty good especially among holiday fare.

This book explains Christmas celebrations of a simpler and yet not simpler time. The family does everything from scratch - making candles, creche figures, cookies etc. Lots of hard work. But compared to today, the celebration itself was very simple. A good message for today's kids.

As the first German family in the village, the bring the traditions we associate with Christmas with them. The traditions catch on. What I love most is the explanation of making bayberry candles and how the bring prosperity in the new year. One year my brother-in-law of German descent gave us a bayberry candle to burn on New Years Day to bring prosperity. In the years since I've given many (I get handmade ones from Colonial Williamsburg). So this year I will send a copy of this book to his grandchildren (My grand-nephews).
