Beautiful Experience, January 22, 2008
This review is from: Early Art and Architecture of Africa (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
This book is a very well rounded and well written review of the art and architecture of Africa. It is very eye opening about the artistic abilities of these ancient people. It even goes beyond what we know about their construction. You find that awe-inspiring palaces were not confined to Egypt and the rest of North Africa, but advanced societies had flourished apart from the rest of the world. I really don't want to give away any of the details, but you won't regret the purchase of this book.

Review of Garlake's 'Art and Architecture of Africa', January 24, 2011
This review is from: Early Art and Architecture of Africa (Oxford History of Art) (Paperback)
This is a fairly straightforward historical period piece on ancient art in Africa. It covers a range of various cultures and the art each produced. There is an odd dissonance of time, with the author moving forward and backward as he selects different regions to consider. Garlake offers insightful commentary on the limitations of art history in Africa, given various social and political barriers to research.
