Book Description

November 1, 2000
The history of fine painting in West Virginia has long been overshadowed by the state's recognized excellence in the areas of folk arts. This beautiful, museum-quality book corrects that oversight, documenting the life and work of approximately 1,000 painters who worked in the state before about 1930. From the early small-town portraitists, to the scores of prominent landscapists who depicted the state's legendary beauty, to the West Virginia masters of the modernist movements, native and visiting artists have practiced every style of American art. This lavishly produced, oversized book features hundreds of full-color reproductions from museums and private collections around the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An impressive body of research, well-written and well-documented." -- Jessie Poesch, author of The Art of the Old South<br /><br />"This book will stimulate appreciation of American portraiture and landscape painting..." --William H. Gerdts, author of Art Across

From the Back Cover

Early Art and Artists in West Virginia is copiously illustrated with 136 plates accompanying the essays on portraiture and landscape painting, which form the first half of the book. A similar number of smaller illustrations in full color bring life to a biographical directory in the second part of the book, which contains nearly one thousand known painters who worked in West Virginia. Many West Virginians will find their family names in this directory, and some will doubtless locate the information here that they have long sought in order to learn more about a painting in their family's possession. The book is supported by an extensive bibliography on the state's artistic heritage and a full index to both the directory and the essays.

2001 American Graphic Design Awards Winner
