A short read that is well worth the time and money!Bainton provides an excellent scholarly overview of the development of Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. What makes this work especially valuable is his incorporation of original source documents into his analysis of the early church so that one is quickly able to grasp how he is thinking about the source materials and evaluate the cogency of his argumentation. I appreciated in particular his discussion of the competing mystery religions and struggle with Roman emperor worship that left Christianity the sole religious victor following Constantine in 313ad. |
