Editorial Reviews

(2-CD set for the price of one CD) The success of the Dave Brubeck Quartet during the '50s-'60s was astonishing. The history of modern jazz has never witnessed another phenomenon like it. When "Take Five" took flight in 1960, Brubeck's quartet became one. Proper. 2003

3.0 out of 5 stars Early Content Shleps, September 22, 2005
This review is from: Early Concepts (Audio CD)
This is another of those irritating compilation albums that I so detest. The music is great, no doubt, because it comes from PARTS of 3 albums.

Cuts 1-18 CD1 are from the 18 cut album "Dave Brubeck Octet"

Cuts 19-27 CD1 and Cuts 1-10 CD2 are 19 of the 24 cuts from the album "24 Original Classic Recordings" containing the complete Fantasy 3-1,3-2,3-4 LPs from 1950-51.

Cuts 11-25 CD2 are 15 of the 17 cuts from the album "Stardust" missing the alternative takes of "Stardust" and "At a Perfume Counter"

This begs the question, "Why not just buy the originals?" Of course you may save a few dollars, but you will be missing 7 pieces of music. Look at purchasing an album as a ticket to a concert that can be heard over and over again. Of course, no album no matter how good can compare to a live Dave Brubeck concert. I've only seen 5 concerts since I'm not much of a traveller, but wouldn't trade those for all 70 of my LPs and CDs. Yet, the music will satisfy until the next concert coming your way. He ought to be 90 by then.
