A book worth your money and time!!!, March 7, 2008
This review is from: The Early English Baptists, 1603-49 (Hardcover)
A Baptist historian recently recommended that I read Stephen Wright's The Early English Baptist 1603-1649. So I did. The first surprise was the price. The book is expensive! So if you can, don't do as I did, go to your nearest theological library and borrow a copy..
The second surprise is that the book is well worth the price. Wright is a first class scholar of the origins of those often troubling and downright peculiar people called Baptists.
Using wills, notes, sermons, correspondence Wright weaves a thoughtful narrative of early Baptists. Warning! He is a tough read. You have to stay with his names and characters. But it is well worth the effort.
I would suuggest you also read Christopher Hill's Turning the World Upside Down.
Wright is not a late night read, unless you suffer from insomnia. Stay with Letterman or Leno before you slip off to bed. With a good night's rest , alert and ready to read, you will find Wright insightful and thoughtful.
