Down-to-earth album,
By Alan Cale (Melbourne, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Early (Audio CD)
Fayssoux's version of Rodney Crowell's "California Earthquake" is simple and unassuming. This unassuming quality also works well on the sadly sweet "The Blackest Crow," and on her jubilant take on "Weepin' Mary." "The Blackest Crow" is underpinned by Lloyd Green's lovely steel work, and the harmony is bolstered by Emmylou Harris (whose backup singer Fayssoux was); on "Weepin' Mary", Fayssoux is joined on vocals by Sharon and Cheryl White and by mandolinist Ricky Skaggs. But the album is not all quiet; she really cuts loose on the high-flying "Save It! Save It!" with Peter Cooper. Fayssoux's song choices, from gospel to country to contemporary folk, generate a solid set. All of these qualities--solid songs, lively performances, and well-sung vocals--create a down-to-earth album that sounds good and that is easy to enjoy.
