This review is from: Early Gothic Saint-Denis: Restorations and Survivals (Paperback)
The downward spiral of St. Denis, from Sugars unestimatable splendors to a vandalized grainery left unstable and uninhabitable. Nineteenth century restorations under Francois Debrets shows a callous ineptitude one can only wonder at.Blum toothbrushes her way through the grime offering a meticuliously studied topography of the western central portal sculptures and revealing original twelfth century work untouched by restorers chisels I thought the book was informative but tedious. |
