Editorial Reviews

Review

It would be a tragedy given the exquisite understated magnificence and warmth of these 42 minutes if all Eleanor McEvoy were remembered is A Woman's Heart. Eleanor's Dido-before-Dido voice and some of the best happy/sad songs she has ever written plus deconstructed classics by Chuck Berry and Bert Jansch, this is her White Ladder, her Life For Rent. A triumph. --Mojo

The appeal of early hours lies in its basic folk-roots simplicity, nothing is allowed to get in the way of the songs. Like good food McEvoy's music requires no garnish. --Maverick

While Thea Gilmore gets all the attention, the similarly gifted Eleanor McEvoy has been busy honing a far-more affecting brand of singer-songwriterly femme-folk imbued with the beauty of Judie Tzuke and the wordplay of Suzanne Vega. That's a pantheon that McEvoy is eminently qualified to join, now is the time for it to happen. --Logo Magazine

Product Description

(Hybrid SACD also plays on all CD players) Early Hours takes Eleanor McEvoy's music to new heights. Couched now in a mature jazz/blues context, her melodic and sensitive songs - packed as ever with wry, insightful social observation - benefit from first rate performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...., August 19, 2005
This review is from: Early Hours (Audio CD)
It is astounding that the unfavorable and wrong-headed March 29 "review" above has remained for almost five months the sole, unchallenged customer review posted here concerning this truly remarkable recording. (Will some others who have appreciated Eleanor McEvoy's outstanding contributions to music please weigh in here and raise the average to nigh 5 stars, where it certainly should be?) "Early Hours" is a true joy to hear, but not for casually playing in the background. Attention must be paid, and well-spent will be your time in doing so. I am apparently not alone in these opinions, as a recent Irish Music Magazine Readers Poll voted "Early Hours" as Best Contemporary Album 2004-2005. Please remember that, after you receive the copy that you are just about to order, the liner notes in respect of each cut are required reading.

My only complaint is that I find the intro to "I'll Be Willing" to be reminiscent of "Mood Indigo", and it puts me in the wrong state of mind for the upbeat, catchy tune which follows. Apart from that itty-bitty peeve, this recording (both from the artist's side and the audio-engineering side) is perfect.

I have really come to love this album and Eleanor's lovely voice.

To fully appreciate it, you really need to give it a serious listening in a quiet setting. I admit, the first time I heard it, I was busy with other things, there was lots of noise in the background, and I just didn't appreciate it.

Now, having listened to it several times, I find that I just love it. The SACD recording is first rate and I actually love the fact that many songs are very ambient (meaning that you hear only her voice or only an instrument or two at any given time). I really showcases the difference between a plain CD and an SACD - there is just no way a plain CD could sound this good.

My favorite song is "Ave Maria", which is so beautiful it almost brings a tear to my eye (almost!, I am a manly man after all :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not be Mislead, September 28, 2005

This is without no doubt a five star cd, as her previous works. Eleonor Mcevoy is an excellent interpreter, composer, songwriter, singer. She really has a beautiful voice and also her lyrics are very well written. One thing that I appreciate in her works is her versatility, she can performs different styles witout lossing her esence.
