4.0 out of 5 stars Promising Debut For The Future of Folk January 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Anyone who read my "Best Songs of 2010" article may remember McMorrow's name falling into the 12 spot with "We Don't Eat." Now, nearly a year after its release in the U.K., "Early in the Morning" has finally earned a release in the U.S.

Recorded on his own while living in a cottage on the coast, "Early in the Morning" quickly sets the mood with "If I Had a Boat." Like "We Don't Eat," "If I Had a Boat" starts off quietly, but gradually builds in both vocal strength and instrumentation as the track progresses. Already a pro with them, these crescendos may very well become a trademark of McMorrow further along in his career. Additionally, shades of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Band of Horses, and Iron & Wine all fill in McMorrow's mixes with a unique beauty that is very much his own despite the influences.

As the album treks forward, McMorrow proves he isn't a one trick pony with tracks like "Sparrow & the Wolf" which adds hints of country and maintains an upbeat tempo throughout. Although his more emotionally captivating tracks are the clear focus, the occasional upbeat flare adds a pleasant contrast to the album.

"We Don't Eat" is an unbelievably beautiful track and is worth the price of the album by itself, but McMorrow's equally sung and whispered lyrics intertwined with a lush musical framework makes for an enjoyable album from beginning to end; creating a very promising debut for the young Irish artist.

Similar Artists: Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver
Track Suggestion: "We Don't Eat"

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Album October 1, 2011
By sprag80
Format:MP3 Music
I had the good fortune to "discover" this wonderful artist at a folk concert outside Dublin earlier this year. His haunting and powerful performance blew me and the audience away. But the riveting live performance was only the appetizer for the main course: McMorrow's magnificant album "Early In The Morning." Think early Neil Young, only better. McMorrow's tenor is haunting and the songs are power and beauty combined. The haunting and stirring "Walk in the Woods," for example, has to be heard to be believed.

This is a beautiful, powerful album by a great artist.
