These are my kind of poems--formally expert, of peerless control, smooth when they should be and rough when they should be, written with and against the grain, with the overall theme of evanescence. I first read "The Ballad of the Dead Yankees" when I was twenty, in 1965; it memorized itself. When the particulars interplay with the general in Petersen's poems, there's no one better. Mother of mercy, thank God for him!
