Book Description

January 1, 1998 0878406638 978-0878406630

The first book in English on the founder of Arabic linguistic theory, this interdisciplinary collection explores the contributions to Arabic intellectual history of al-Khalil ibn Ahmad, (d. A.H. 175/A.D. 791).

Al-Khalil was distinguished in his own time as a lexicographer, phonologist, grammarian, educator and musicologist. In the Arab world, his stature is almost legendary, although information on his life, his works and his achievements is fragmented. He is remembered principally for two achievements: the creation of the first dictionary of the Arabic language ( Kitab al-'ayn, "The Book of 'ayn"), and discovery of the rule-governed metrical systems used in pre-Islamic Arabic poetry. His biographers also cite publications on musical theory and have preserved fragments of his poetry. In addition to these achievements, he was also the teacher of the medieval Islamic world's most distinguished authority on Arabic grammar, Sibawayh.

Conceived as a tribute to al-Khalil's influence on Arabic language sciences, this book provides a new and broader perspective on al-Khalil's talents, character, and fields of interest. It should be of interest to Arabic linguists, medievalists, historians of linguistics, theoretical linguists, historians of science and scholars of medieval Arab intellectual history.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"All four essays are valuable, and together they cast light both on al-Khalil and on the question of how much can ever be known about a pioneering thinker of whose work so little has survived." -- MESA Bulletin

"These essays are stimulating and offer new material on the role and work of al-Khalil, one of the most famous of the classical Arab philologists." -- MELA Notes

This review is from: Early Medieval Arabic: Studies on Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad (Arabic Language Linguistics History of Science) (Hardcover)
This four essay collection provides a detailed look at the life and work of the father of the Arabic linguistic tradition. Al-Khalil created the first Arabic lexicon, the "Kitaab al-'ayn", was a sought after teacher, phonologist, and musicologist. The essays in this book describe all of these facets. In particular, Ramzi Baalbaki's analysis of the Kitaab with the Jamharat al-lugha is excellent and worth the price of the book alone. Carter's essay on al-Khalil the Man is also excellent. Eckhard Neubauer's essay on al-Khalil's analysis of traditional Arabic music is somewhat less interesting, though I read the book with an eye to the linguistic not the musical. Finally Karin Ryding's analysis of his work on the genitive construction is interesting but quite technical and really of interest only those who also care about this particular area of Arabic grammar.

With the exception of Michael Carter's essay, this collection is not for someone without a background in Arabic linguistics: the papers assume you know who al-Khalil was and what his accomplishments were. This is not a detriment, of course, given the audience who would buy this.

The book is marred by shoddy typography and a modicum of typographical errors. Compared to the care that goes into the production of some linguistic works (such as those published by Moutin De Gruyter or John Benjamins) it was a bit of a let down. However, the content is there and well worth owning.
