Most Helpful Customer Reviews

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Blake Scalet on June 15, 2012
Format: Paperback
As the title implies, this is a survey and study of the developments involving baptism from the Early Church through the Middle Ages. This is the first of two volumes that cover developments in baptism, specifically liturgical developments. To be fair, a very broad selection of materials and periods are covered in this volume. Each section presents a succinct summary and commentary on developments and thinkers. More in-depth studies of baptism can be found that focus on select eras of church history, but few could boast of this level of scholarship while maintaining the scope of the entirety of history.

This book is helpful both for the serious scholar and the more interested amateur. Spinks is a liturgical scholar of the first-class and this book is no exception. The material is well-researched and balanced. Primary source material is presented in abundance throughout the book. However, Spinks is a truly judicious author. His commentary is clear and aimed at understanding. While, the text is technical it is not beyond understanding for most readers. His page length also makes this book a reasonable time commitment for pastors, students, and interested lay people alike.
