Must read for those who love the Flemish Primitives. BUT the reading imo is cold treacle because of the prolix, towering intellect of Panofsky. Words and usage never aforeseen on almost every page. Bigger biceps, and there is a clearer understanding of the progression to and from these geniuses. Mainly by way of the miniatures/illumination, neatly correlated with the geopoliticoeconomic forces I've not found in subsequent works. Odd. If only I could have listened to him in person.
