Book Description

February 3, 2004
The definitive book about early puberty in girls—what it is, how it happens, when to be concerned, and how it should be treated.

In recent years, the issue of early puberty in girls has become a well-publicized topic. But the messages from the medical establishment and the media have been confusing and often conflicting. Now Dr. Paul Kaplowitz, a pediatric endocrinologist who has treated children for more than twenty years, has written a comprehensive and completely accessible book on the subject—the perfect guide for parents concerned about their daughters’ premature development. Inside, they will find the answers to many questions, including

What are the hormonal and physical changes of normal puberty? Breast development, pubic and underarm hair, body odor, menarche
(a girl’s first period), and the pubertal growth spurt
How do we know if puberty is starting too early? The age and circumstances under which a girl can mature too soon; why this is occurring earlier than in the past, and why that age is earlier for African American girls
What effects does the early onset of puberty have on the behavior and emotional health of young girls? From anxiety and withdrawal to worries about stunted growth, earlier periods, and earlier sexual activity
Is it because the environment or our fats cells? An in-depth look at the potential culprits: chemicals and hormones in the environment, family relationships, stress, and increasing obesity
To treat or not to treat? The six essential questions whose answers will determine whether treatment is necessary for your early-maturing daughter
How should a family prepare for a visit to a specialist? Important tips for getting the most out of a visit to a pediatric endocrinologist

Dr. Kaplowitz also details extensive case histories that will help parents understand the real issues that may appear in girls’ lives. Reassuring, authoritative, and thoroughly detailed, Early Puberty in Girls is a must-have book for every parent of a young girl.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Dr. Kaplowitz has produced an excellent resource on recent issues and controversies regarding early puberty in girls. His ability to write about a complicated medical area in terms that families can understand will help many parents and children who have questions about pubertal events and whether or not treatments might be needed under certain circumstances.”

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed, November 8, 2010

This review is from: Early Puberty in Girls: The Essential Guide to Coping with This Common Problem (Paperback)
This book was helpful in some aspects, but too many "studies". I was looking for more basic info, not about percentages, minorities or case histories. Just the facts and ideas on how to cope with early puberty. I have a 9 year old daughter going through puberty right now and this book didn't help much with helping me deal with the emotional aspect of what I or my daughter are feeling.

3.0 out of 5 stars book on early puberty, July 4, 2009

This review is from: Early Puberty in Girls: The Essential Guide to Coping with This Common Problem (Paperback)
The book is clear and well written. Very informative for parents of girls with possible precocious puberty. Two deficiencies: (1) the book is outdated. some of the info no longer applies due to the fast pace of medical advances. Confirm what you read with your daughter's doctor. (2) Dr. Kaplowitz has an agenda in this book--to lay out his arguments for the criteria and proper treatments for early puberty. These arguments are based on previous contentious disagreements on the criteria and proper treatments for precocious puberty in girls, arguments that occurred in highly public venues some years back, between him and other pediatric endocrinologists. His arguments are logical (i.e., based on clinical evidence), but there are also compelling arguments to be found from the "opposition", which is not presented in an unbiased way. Some and even many of these arguments are bound to be irrelevant because the book is now pretty old, as mentioned above. 8 years is a very long time in clinical biomedical research.

These aspects make the book less valuable as a resource for parents trying to choose a doctor or understand the recommendations of their doctor and their implications. However, given the limited field of lay literature in this area, the book is still worth reading if one is aware of these caveats.
