Young Magda Olivero at the highest level, October 10, 2000
This review is from: Early Recording Sessions, 1938-1940 (Audio CD)
This CD is a real pleausre. Magda Olivero was one of the greatest sopranos of the XX century, and she enjoyed a long carreer, but it was split in two halves: she retired in the 40s, when she was very young, and then she came back to stages in the 50s, after an interruption of more than a decade. Her return was glorious, and some recordings reveal her as an extraordinary Adriana Lecouvreur (the ideal in the composer's opinion), and as a great Tosca, Gioconda, Manon Lescaut or Fedora. However, the quality of her early recordings was never surpassed. The CD we are now commenting contains excerpts of her extraordinary Liu, which is considered to be one of the best interpretation of this role in the history of records. The CD also includes a selection of arias from Adriana Lecouvreur, Mefistofele and other italian and French operas. In all cases her voice sounds fresh, young and great. This CD is a valuable historical document of one of the greatest voices of the century, but it is also a really enjoyable experience.
