Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler - directed by Clyde Petersen

Biography

Quasi formed in Portland, Ore., in 1993, which means that it's been fearlessly rocking since long before your website launched or you booted up an iPod. For years -- 17 to be exact -- it was a duo consisting of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. In 2006, Joanna Bolme (of Stephen Malkmus + The Jicks) joined the band on bass.

Quasi flings words and notes relentlessly, hurling music across the stage like… Read more in Amazon's Quasi Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD worth having, October 15, 2002

This CD will be a great adquisition for both newcomers and fans of Quasi. If you're a newcomer to Quasi, this beautiful CD -just take a look to the CD cover- will give you a nice taste of that wonderful and inventive duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss (check Janet's drumming: she's a hell of a drummer. Remember Bonham from Led Zeppelin? Well, listen carefully to Weiss' drumming again). Believe me that after you hear this, you will order all their recordings. For fans of Quasi, this compilation of early recordings will help tracing their sound, origins and developments of it, besides enjoying it as hell. And that's another reason for getting this CD: we should be grateful to them and their music. Think how nice it is to have Quasi in those Britney Spears' or Andrew WK's days. Think if we didn't have them. Man, what a cold shower, isn't it? So, check this out. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic experimental rock album., May 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Early Recordings (Audio CD)
Tis record sounds nothing like Quasi. Few of the songs could ever be played live by the band but the album is still completely awesome. This is a collection of songs that Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss recorded in their house over a period of a couple years. There is hardly any of the now trademark Quasi sound of the distorted harpsichord and most of the songs lack any real structure. Standouts iclude the incredible "Mammon"(an amazing balladesque song with just Sam and his piano) and "Monkey, Mirror"(an almost psychadelic rock song with a dreamy keyboard sample floating in and out). This is probably the only place you will ever hear these songs so grab it and get ready to be blown away by some weird stuff from one of the best bands around.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Fans Only, August 11, 2003
This review is from: Early Recordings (Audio CD)
Length 54:15
It's cool to see where the band started out and how they built up from their archetypal recordings, but for someone just entering the realm of Quasi, I recommend the gorgeous Featuring Birds or R&B Transmogrification. This album has a few standout tracks, but the bulk of it is experimental dissonance that the band would later refine into beautiful songs on the aforementioned records. Noteworthy tracks include Sam's wry, bemoaning "Mammon," the raw, driving "Pay Me Now, or Pay Me Later," the spacy "Homunculus," and the disparately light-hearted opener, "Two Hounds." Like most cds, you will find some tracks on this album that you will enjoy, but their are too many cacophonous excursions on this album, leaving a great gap in the feeling and cohesiveness of the record. Try out the previously mentioned Quasi cds, and if you like them a lot, give this a try.
