This history of Scotland was actually finished after the author's death by his widow. The book primarily is about the Picts, giving a great deal of information on them, including an in-depth analysis of the king-lists. Also included are notes on the Irish traditions of Picts living in Ireland(!), the kingdom of Dalraida, and the British kingdoms of southern Scotland.The first chapters of this book are rather dry, and written in a very academic manner. However, as the book goes on, the author does succeed in grabbing the reader's interest. Some of the details given in this book are out of date, as it was published in 1974, but the depth of information makes this book well worth reading. As an added bonus, this book contains a large, fold-out map of Scotland, so that you can link up references to places with their actual location. 5 stars! |
