5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD Great Band PINK FLOYD, January 5, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Early Singles (Audio CD)
This is a great CD all the songs rock but the songs arent as rare because of the recent realese Of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 3 CD boxset which includes all the Syd Barrett singles. Still this a great buy because the two songs, " It Would Be So Nice", and, " Point Me At The Sky", i have seen are only on this CD on amazon(unless you want to buy the shine on boxset) Though it still is a good deal and a good buy because this CD is not avaible in stores in the US i will now reveiw each track
1. Arnold Layne, this song went up to #20 in the charts. Good song i like the bass in the song. Its a good simple 3 minute song. Great psychedelic rock song 5/5 stars
2. Candy And A Currant Bun, this is a very very good song the b side to arnold layne. It has good organ in it and has a really steady psychedelic beat great song. One of the best songs on the whole album, 5/5 stars
3. See Emily Play, this song is classic it has probaly the best beat to it on the whole album Orginally titled, "Games For May". Its a classic psychedelic song any Pink Floyd fan should have these songs on this album. 5/5 stars
4. Scarecrow, not the best song really short only 2 minutes but its just OKAY of a song nothing more to say 3/5 stars
5. Apples And Oranges, great song it has a cool beat to it the last single Pink Floyd would relased with Syd Barrett in the band. Cool Beat great song 5/5 stars
6. Paintbox, this is another great great song it has a nice steady beat to it. Its a cool song 5/5 stars
7. It Would Be So Nice, a great song has a nice upbeat beat to it. Great song any Pink Floyd fan has to hear this stuff 5/5 stars
8. Julia Dream, a Roger Waters written song it has a cool slow beat to it a good song, 5/5 stars
9. Point Me At The Sky, a good psychedelic rock song. It has a lot of cool keyboards on it and has a cool beat to it a great song, 5/5 stars
10. Careful With That Axe Eugene, the song that they played at so many concerts the longest song clocking in at over 5 minutes long. Its a very cool psychedelic rock song has a cool bass intro to it. great song 5/5 stars
all in all this album is a must have and for 25 bucks is a sweet deal. Buy IT TODAY!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Point Me At the Sky, August 27, 2009

This review is from: The Early Singles (Audio CD)
This is an collection of Pink Floyd's 60s singles along with their B-sides. It's interesting hearing three-minute singles from a band mostly known for epic album-oriented rock music and psychedelic freak-outs.

The first five songs are from when Syd Barrett was the band's frontman. They exhibit Syd's talent for making outlandish, yet irrestible pop music very well. The next two ("It Would Be So Nice" and "Paintbox")are from a very brief period in Pink Floyd's history when keyboardist Richard Wright was said to be the next leader of Pink Floyd, Syd having fallen mentally ill. They're decent, but seem to lack momentum and enthusiasm when compared to Syd's work. The last three ("Julia Dream", "Point Me At the Sky", and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene") are the work of bassist Roger Waters, with Dave Gilmour co-composing "Point Me At the Sky". That track and "Julia Dream" are both excellent early examples of the work of the Floyd lineup that would become one of the most legendary bands of the classic rock era. "Julia Dream" is a haunting song with spine-tingling organ and softly sung, paranoid lyrics. "Point Me At the Sky" is an ambitious piece about a man who shoots himself off into space in a rocketship. "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" is a well-known Pink Floyd staple that I believe sounds much better live (on "Ummagumma") than in the studio, although the studio version is still good.

Get this CD for "Point Me At the Sky", which doesn't appear on any other CD release that I am aware of. It's a good way to get the other singles in one place as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Floyd I Never Knew, May 1, 2011

This review is from: The Early Singles (Audio CD)
I grew up with Pink Floyd post Syd Barrett (specifically Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals), but after reading Syd's biography A Very Irregular Head, I started to check out Syd's songbook. Syd was the master of early Floyd clearly.

When I saw this album included one of my all time favorite Syd song's, "Candy and a Currant Bun," (aka "Let's Roll Another One") I knew I had to buy it, especially because I can't find this song on any other album. Syd's vocals are nothing less than irresistible. The album is packaged nicely, and I think it's a British import, hence the $20.00 price tag. That said, I was a little disappointed that the version of the song that hooked me via youtube is not the one on this album. The youtube version is a different mix and packs a stronger punch. The one on this CD is more of the psychedelic variety, and in that diversion, the song loses some of its catchy momentum.

The incentive for buying an album like this is that it includes songs that are not on other albums, and there's quite a few, some I never heard. Five songs in fact. Sadly, "Lucifer Sam" (flip side to See Emily Play 45) is not on this and, being it's one of Syd's finer songs, it should have been included.

All in all, if you love Syd Barrett and Early Floyd, this is gonna be your jam. Sadly, very little visual evidence remains of live footage featuring Syd's short reign w/ Floyd. Hey somebody out there, collect all their TV appearances and UFO shows and collect them into a DVD, would yah? Please?

Listening to this collection gives me chills and grins throughout the entire record, it's that good. Full of haunting whimsical vocals in folk, english music hall and Wind and the Willows storybook stylings and with the incredible dissonance of sound from the group, all done with plenty of urgency. This is psychedelia at it's finest.

A must for every Pink Floyd fan to complete their collection.
Even if you have all the singles on vinyl, they must be getting scratched by now so this album is a godsend. Normally associated with the box set Shine On,(in Britain at any rate), this album is difficult to find, but is well worth the money as some of the content does not appear on any other album.
