Book Description

The history of the early Slavs is a subject of renewed interest and one which is highly controversial both politically and historically. This pioneering text reviews the latest archaelogical (and other) evidence concerning the first settlers, their cultural identities and their relationship with their modern successors. Dr Dolukhanov explores the various historiographical debates before offering his own interpretations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

' This book is an exemplary summary treatment of Eastern European pre- and proto-history which will be of immense assistance to a wide range of readers, but especially to university readers. It ranges from the earliest human activities in western Russia to the Rus kingdom. The author has set out to use the longer time-span to reveal as fully as possible the wider setting of the early historic peoples, including the early Slavs. No other book in English covers this ground so recently and so well.' This review is from: The Early Slavs: Eastern Europe from the Initial Settlement to the Kievan Rus (Paperback)
The author was a Research Associate of the Institute of Archaeology of the USSR Academy of Science, then Director of the Laboratory for Archaeological Technology, and most recently Reader in East European Archaeology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. In other words, this is not a romanticized puff piece for nationalists, this is a synthesis of scientific evidence written by an expert who was engaged in field work for decades, and is internationally recognized.
Chapters include:
Geographical setting
The Initial Settlement - paleolithic through Late Glacial, early languages
Postglacial Farmers and Hunters - Holocene through Middle Neolithic
The Beaker Folks - through the Bronze Age
The Age of Change - Iron Age, Cimmerians, Scythians, etc.
The Slavs, Balts and Finns
The Slavs in Europe -
The Vikings and the Rus - up to the beginnings of Russian statehood

237 pages, 47 figures, glossary, academic bibliography, index
