From the Back Cover

Here is a brief history of the development of the early Christian church in Wales from the time of St. David ("Dewi") around 500 AD to the Norman conquest. Welsh Christianity followed a Celtic pattern of ascetic men and women who lived alone in caves or woods, or traveled through the countryside, preaching. With the decline of asceticism and learning and a rise in the accumulation of church wealth, monasteries and churches gradually evolved into an ecclesiastical structure ruled by wealthy landowning priests and married clergy. Devastation from the Viking raids eventually brought an end to this era. It was an end aptly characterized by the popular tale of divine judgment in 999 against the first bishop of St. David's who dared to eat meat. This booklet provides a concise overview of early Welsh Christianity, with index and references. It is designed for the student, the weekend traveler, or the tourist who wants a quick summary of this formative period in the history of early Christianity in Britain.
