The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which… Read more in Amazon's John Lee Hooker Store

5.0 out of 5 stars This and the Rhino box...and you've got it made., May 4, 2001

This review is from: Early Years (Audio CD)
This collection is the perfect companion piece to Rhino's "The Ultimate Collection," which itself is fabulous.

Rhino has a habit of cleaning up recordings, almost to a fault, and removing some of the earthy grit that makes some blues cuts work.

Though there is significant overlap between the two collections, they sound significantly different. The Rhino stuff sounds audiophile perfect, while this Tomato set sounds like you stacked a coupla records on the changer.

Mr Hooker is not about clean studio sound, so both collections work to recreate this legend's best efforts. I wish this set had a version of "Teachin the Blues" on it...but hey...no one has enough different cuts of "Boom Boom."
