I was given this book by a family member a year and a half ago after I quit my then-current (and miserable) job. I had never even thought about working for myself, but after reading the book, decided to work up the courage to try it. The book gives some detailed planning on how to go about starting several different types of businesses - from small moving services to tree removal - using one's van or truck.
I enjoyed the book and even made some decent money following the steps in it, but the author left out some important details in the process. For example, starting a moving business isn't as easy as just hopping in your van and moving people. As I came to find out later, in NJ, where I was working, functioning as a legal moving company of any kind requires one to have a state license and insurance (three different kinds, actually, as I was told by the state movers and warehouseman's board). And no, it ain't cheap. If you don't want to get dropped by your automotive insurance company for using your personal auto policy for business work, you need to get commercial auto insurance, too. Again, not cheap. These details are glossed over in the book. The author says to not worry initially about all the potential red tape associated with starting such a business and just hop right in and do it. Not smart - imagine moving potentially expensive items, getting into a crash and having no cargo insurance to cover the cost of replacing the items. You'd be screwed.
There are plenty of guys in NYC running "moonlight" moving companies, under the radar of the legal state authorities. I'm sure some of them have even read this book. My advice - read the book for the suggestions it offers to get you started, but do your homework and find out how to run the business legally. You'll be better off in the long run.

This book is a true gem. So many books on starting a business of your own are filled with fluff and pie in the sky pseudo-motivational junk. Not this one. It describes a business virtually anyone in reasonably good health can start for very little capital. The work is hard, but the pay is good, and you learn everything you need to know to start working for yourself. Outstanding and highly recommended.

I enjoy this book and refer back to it. Lots of practical, usable information from someone who has actually done it!
Recommended for strong, healthy people who want to work for themselves but don't know where to start.

The writer of this book has an amazing grasp of the obvious. There is nothing in this book that anyone wouldn't think of on their own.
