Billy Corgan talks Smashing Pumpkins' Gish and Siamese Dream Reissues

Biography

The Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most popular alternative rock bands of the 1990s, mostly thanks to the success of second and third albums Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. At the height of their fame they guest-starred in a memorable episode of The Simpsons.
The line-up of American alt-rock band the Smashing Pumpkins has altered over the years since their formation in… Read more in Amazon's Smashing Pumpkins Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Earphoria is something of a headscratcher. A sprawling, mostly live collection of tracks recorded in concert and during television performances, the disc stops short of the band's mid-'90s commercial peak, with the latest offering culled from '94. What's more, there's a roughness to the edits, suggesting a quick turnaround or possibly a lack of involvement from infamous perfectionist and Pumpkin head Billy Corgan. "Soma," for instance, fades abruptly, midapplause. Better-known tracks such as "Disarm" and "Today"--recorded on English TV and in Chicago, respectively--offer negligible changes over their studio siblings. Collectors will appreciate "French Movie Theme" and the rambling, unhinged--and quarter-hour-long--"Why Am I So Tired." But really, this one is for die-hards only and a pale companion to 2001's comprehensive Greatest Hits. --Kim Hughes

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet more misinformation., January 2, 2003
This review is from: Earphoria (Audio CD)
There are no extra or bonus tracks on this import version compared to the U.S. release of Earphoria. The little paper Japanese sleeve is cool...but probably not worth $30. Save yourself some money and get the cheaper version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon's Wrong, November 27, 2002
This review is from: Earphoria Live (Audio CD)
Amazon.com's (...)own review/synopsis for this disc is massively confusing and misleading. Earphoria is not a "live disc" or a "greatest hits disc", it is the soundtrack to the Smashing Pumpkins first home video "Viewphoria." It's not meant to be thought of as it's own entity (hence the rough cuts and archaic song choices, these are the takes from the video which was released in the mid '90s). This album is not new either, but is a re-release of the original promo soundtrack to the video that has been very hard to find until now. It's a great disc for any Pumpkin Head and actually a good introduction to the energy and freedom that is the Pumpkins live sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Track listing, December 25, 2002
This review is from: Earphoria Live (Audio CD)
other people have covered a lot of the important stuff-like the Amazon reviewer is off in saying that Disarm sounds the same as the SD version, when it has the full band playing and has a loud and crunchy guitar replacing the strings; or that the reason it only covers the period up to '94 is because it's the soundtrack to Viewphoria, a tape released in '94, and was itself originaly released as a demo at the same time; or that when it comes right down to it things are a bit rough in places (especially the at-times uniteligable vocals on Geek) and as a result is a fans only release. But Amazon doesn't have the tracklisting, so, here goes:

1. Sinfony
2. Quiet (live)
3. Disarm (live)
4. Cherub Rock (live, acoustic)
5. Today (live)
6. Bugg Superstar
7. I Am One (live)
8. Pulseezar
9. Soma (live)
10. Slunk (live)
11. French Movie Theme
12. Geek USA (live)
13. Mayonase (live, acoustic)
14. Silverf*** (live)
14a. Over the Rainbow
15. Why am I so Tired

The bulk of the album is 60 minutes, plus the 15 min instrumental "Why am I so Tired". Like I said, really for fans only. Anyhow, enjoy.
