5.0 out of 5 stars A true family heirloom.
This is a book that I would have loved as a child. Don't get me wrong, I love it today but a child would bask in the wonders of the Earth for hours with these images. 3.0 out of 5 stars Poor Formatting
Absolutely gorgeous, but they needed a little more thought put into the process. Many of the pictures have the primary interest in the center. When they made several of the pictures two pages wide they essentially obliterated the picture with the fold in the book. VERY frustrating. All of his photos are spectacular and worth the money though. Too bad they didn't plan it...

This is a book that I would have loved as a child. Don't get me wrong, I love it today but a child would bask in the wonders of the Earth for hours with these images. It's hard to believe that some of the locations in this book are on this planet. There is such beauty and awe in these pictures. At almost every turn of the page there is a "wow" coming out of my mouth. Well worth the money. The only gripe I have is the reference of the locations. You have to flip around all over the place to find out the location of the photographs. There does not seem to be any order connecting the photos to the descriptions. Don't worry though! Still get the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will endlessly amaze you!, September 22, 2000
This review is from: Earth From Above (Hardcover)
I first saw the work of this super talented photographer in the wee hours of August 20th, 2000 outside Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. I was so fascinated by the colors, the angles, the beauty, and the emotions conveyed that I pledged to get a copy of the book as soon as I returned to the US. The pictures portray everyday places and people that seem out of this world when viewed through the lens of Arthus-Bertrand. The photographer and his staff really did their homework when putting together the captions that accompany the pictures. They have gathered information on geography, history, ecology, anthropology, economics, sociology, politics, and popular culture to describe the sites, hence increasing our awareness of our precious and wondrous yet fragile world. Earth from Above will never make it to my bookshelf because it's so fascinating that I keep it out on my living room table to share the wonder!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soak in a Book Well Worth Every Cent (it sells itself), June 20, 2000
This review is from: Earth From Above (Hardcover)
I saw this amazing exhibit, "La Terre Vue Du Ciel", of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's in the Jardin du Luxembourg Senat when I was in Paris a few weeks ago. The exhibit included much larger-than poster-sized photos that are some of the same photos contained in the book. They were spectacular and breath-taking. Stunning really. But if you can't afford to go to Paris, or if you can't get a hold of a poster of his work, this book is a fantastic collection of awesome, thoughtful, inspiring, thought-provoking, and humanistic usually unseen images taken from above Earth, that have an incredible aesthetic beauty. I can't recommend this book more highly. I was going to purchase 3-4 of them myself for me and my family and friends. However, I waited to get back to the US before doing so since they are large and very heavy due to the high-quality paper the photos are printed on. I was sorry they would not fit in my luggage as I had wished to stare at the photos for many hours on the plane trip home. Many kudos to Yann Arthus-Bertrand for an outstanding artistic work! Bravo! I hope to see another exhibit by this talented photographer in Paris or the U.S. in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mystical and Inspiring Look at the Earth, November 29, 2005
This review is from: Earth from Above (Hardcover)
Earth from Above is one of those books that just makes you instantly wonder: How in the world did one man do this? The scope and breadth of the territory covered, the absolute beauty of each and every image and the soulfulness of the subjects is almost impossible to describe.

I saw an outdoor installation of the photos from this book project at the Chateau de la Bourdaisiere in the Loire Valley in France recently and was just spellbound. To wander among these huge prints and just ponder what it must have been like to have seen these wonders in person was quite amazing.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand has accomplished what I think few other photographers (including myself) could even envision: he has taken a portrait of the earth from the sky. And he has done it with amazing artistry and clarity and sensitivity. These aren't just photos of mountains and lakes and rivers, either--there are amazing photos of man's creations and also of people at work too--such as in the incredible photos of the great dye pits in Morocco. You just look at these photos and marvel--there is no other way to describe the experience. Moreover you get no sense that this was shot from something as mundane as a helicopter or airplane, you get the feeling Arthus-Bertrand was merely floating over the planet--that's how unobtrusive the aircraft are in these photos.

Beware though, this is the kind of book where you find yourself tapping people next to you in the bookstore on the shoulder and saying "Look at this!" You can't help yourself. If you don't share it within someone, you'll burst. The photographs are that stunning.

As a photographer and the author of many photo how-to books myself, I simply can't imagine creating a project this immense and this touching. I think if I ever walked into a publisher's office and suggested this I would hear the laughter for blocks as I fled down the street! Arthus-Bertrand should get great credit for not just thinking of this immense idea, but for seeing it through.

If you're looking for a one-volume course in world geography, this is it. If you have ambitions to be an aerial photographer, don't even think of not studying this book first--it's required reading. It is also one of the most beautiful photo books you will ever own.

Coffee-table books take up a lot of room and often they just collect dust. Trust me, this book will never collect dust and if you're a wanderer at heart like I am, you'll find yourself daydreaming about planning trips before you get more than a few pages into the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthus-Bertrand is Masterful...., November 7, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Earth From Above (Hardcover)
Without question the most superb collection of aerial photographs I've ever seen. As a landscape photographer, I own dozens of coffee table books covering all types of landscapes, seascapes and even the heavens. I love to learn from those who have blazed a trail ahead of me - to see what makes their work great, so that I may improve my own work.

I can honestly say though, of all the modern photographers who's work I view regularly, only Arthus-Bertrand, David Doubilet and Galen Rowell stand in greatness. Wolfe, Brandenberg, Zuckerman...they're all very good at what they do. But there's something that sets work like this apart from the rest. Words can't do them justice, so I'll stop trying.

Suffice it to say this work is a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Santa, this is what I want for Christmas!, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Earth From Above (Hardcover)
I perused this beautiful book and I've never seen photos as breathtaking as these. I'm not easily impressed anymore, but this book had me enthralled. As I'm busily buying gifts for others, I'm asking Santa for one of my very own. This book will take you places you could only dream of before. Great job!

It is a book of breathtaking aerial views from all over the world. It is intended to be a photographic record of the globe's status in the millenium. This is a beautiful coffee table book (although it is pretty large and heavy). It includes map references for each of the photographs, as well as a textual account of the photograph, its location, the people in it, etc. If Photography is your passion, you will love this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but..., May 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Earth From Above (Hardcover)
This is an incredible book and the photography is abslutely wonderful. It is this beauty that is marred seriously by the construction of the book. The focal point of some of the best photographs is lost in the ditch, (the center seam of the book.) The subject would have been better served by printing the pictures on one page, in a large, wide, rectangular book, with the photo left intact instead of being butchered as some are. This is a terrible flaw in a beautiful creation. Why was it done as it was, anyway?
