Book Description

Gideon Makepeace grew up in Bill Tourney's Traveling Wild West Show, so he knows Indians better than a lot of folks of his day. He and his half-breed lover, Jedediah Buffalo Bird, are traveling east to New Orleans where Gideon hopes they'll find a home together, safe among the crowds of the big city. But it's winter in the desert and a storm is blowing in, so when they run across Kingman, Arizona, just before Christmas, they decide to take their chances and hunker down for the holiday.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2009 Advent Calendar package "Mistletoe Madness".

5.0 out of 5 stars nice holiday read December 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I was going to caution that in spite of this book seeming to stand alone, I might have enjoyed it more due to having read Well Traveled, but I just learned that this story was actually written first so I really don't think you need to. Gideon Mackpiece and Jedediah Buffalo Bird are an established couple this go-round and you don't get all of their backstory, but you know enough to enjoy the book.

As with Traveled, the authors are very adept at immersing you in the time and place, the American west of 1895, and in creating the very distinct voices of the two MCs. Gideon is a 20-year old trick rider who's grown up in his family's traveling show. Jed is a 27-year old half breed, the product of the rape of his Indian mother by a white man. While Gideon is a happy-go-lucky and somewhat naively reckless young man, Jed is quiet and cautious and avoids towns where his kind aren't welcome. You see some of that horrible bigotry in this story, but it's the growing bond between the men that makes this story so sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read! June 17, 2011

If you loved Well Traveled by these two authors, then this is a MUST read. It picks up a few days after Well Traveled and is simply beautiful. You won't be disappointed.
