5.0 out of 5 stars Rock with the pulse...
Steel Pulse is one of the truest reggae groups currently on the circuit. I saw them at a fabulous show in Tucson, AZ of all places, and was deeply impressed by the band's committment to continually playing good music at shows. 2.0 out of 5 stars Slick as a slimeball
Slick, polished, poppy. Ughh! When Steel Pulse keeps it real, there's great reggae to be heard. But this disc is firmly on the pop side of the group's coin, and the listener suffers for it. If you like pop-reggae, that's fine; maybe you'll like this. If you like real roots reggae as I do, try the group's far stronger efforts like "Handsworth Revolution" or...

Steel Pulse is one of the truest reggae groups currently on the circuit. I saw them at a fabulous show in Tucson, AZ of all places, and was deeply impressed by the band's committment to continually playing good music at shows. "Earth Crisis" came out after Steel Pulse hit a rough patch with cheesy '80s rifts that sounded like fake reggae coming out of the elevator speakers in the Waldorf Jamaica. Luckily, they crept out of the shadow that the music industry seemingly imposed upon the entire genre, directing the massive popularity reggae music saw in the 1970's into some electronically-dependant wraith in the next decade. After apologizing profusely in their albums, Steel Pulse regained their foothold as a band that plays amazing music with meaingful lyrics in an age where reggae music fans are few and far between. To understand the real message behind the music, look no farther than Steel Pulse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Under-Rated UK Band That CrossedOver With This CD, September 19, 2005
By
This review is from: Earth Crisis (Audio CD)
This CD despite the somewhat seriousness of the CD's theme ranks as a milestone in Reggae and remains a somewhat happy tuneful upbeat affair, with added version tracks. The band's tight strong structures, melodies, rhythms struck a chord in the USA when this hit and put them on the map which surely spurred the growth of this genre of music..This CD arguably ranks possibly as the groups finest "commercial"effort coming after their 1st Elektra release, moving over from Island Records who brought forth so many of the classic early reggae bands..Pulse are/were foremost a band delivering solid musicianship addressing politics and liberation all within a sophisticated band structure with musicians playing excellently behind David Hinds, the major guitar songwriter, who is best known for his dreads reaching straight up a couple of feet in the air..Hind's songs are a mix of social commentary, love songs, with added touches of studio wizardry...their use of brass, harmonies, overall tightness of the band and it's songs should be enjoyed by those favouring bands like Burning Spear,Aswad(more balladry though)Bob Marley(the Godfather)..
I saw the band play a couple of years ago at a free show in Brooklyn and many of the songs, the title track,Rollerskates,Steepin' Out remain hallmarks of their live set.

5.0 out of 5 stars All time Reggae favorite, November 1, 1998
By A Customer

This is reggae music, as was intended to be, in terms of both music arrangement and lyrics. Listen to them talk about man's self inflicting wounds. "Bob Marley smiles in his grave whenever he hears this CD". Thank you Steel Pulse for "Earth Crisis"

I remember the first time I heard this album. I was 14 years old, and on the block with some friends and my friend "E" put this tape into his car stereo and turned it way up. As the songs rattled off, songs like "Throne of Gold" and "Grab Education" and "Bodyguard" I was amazed at the rich blends of Reggae style and deep social conciousness embedded in every song. If you listen to the lyrics closely, there is also a seriously religious undertone in every song, far removed from the Dancehall, sex you up Reggae that became popular here in America during the 90's. This is a must have CD for any collection. The horns and the bass lines are rich, and at the same time there is a minimalist sound to each and every song, keeping the purity of reggae intact. The lead off song, "Steppin Out" is a classic, and I guarantee that you'll be chanting this song long after the CD has stopped playing (Open Sesame, Here comes Rasta Man...Abracadabra, catch me if you can...Steppin out!). This is an excellent album. Steel Pulse is like the "Frankie Beverly and Maze" of reggae- their style never changes, and their songs stay relevant regardless of the time period. I am still an avid fan to this day, 14 years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply some of the best Reggae, March 22, 2004
By
This review is from: Earth Crisis (Audio CD)
Steel Pulse is a bit different than Marley and Peter Tosh. They have put modern sound to the Reggae beat and I for one think it is fabulous. They are not like the old type Reggae, which I also love, but this is really good listening music. I made a CD mix with some Culture and Mikey Dread to mix it up and I have not listened to anything else for awhile now.

My teenage sons turned me onto this music and I am asking for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open Says A Me, Here Comes RASTA MAN!!!, May 18, 2003

Steel Pulse is a Reggae INSTITUTION to say the least! They seem to have hit upon the successful formula that combines soulful well-written songs, great delivery, and state of the art production! Their earlier and mid-career stuff is the best for sure. When you combine great Reggae songs and great recording/mastering techniques, and listen to them on a great system (I have high end stuff in my car and at home), what more could you want? 'Babylon The Bandit', 'True Democracy', and 'Earth Crisis' are MUST OWNS if you love Reggae!
