Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-In easy-to-read but expressive language, the author explains how different cycles result in day and night and changes in time and seasons on Earth. Attractive watercolor paintings enhance the text. The uncluttered pages, many with white type on dark-blue backgrounds, will be inviting to young readers. This title will be especially useful for classroom units.

From Booklist

Gr. 1-3. "Each day you ride on a slowly spinning planet Earth from day to night and back again." In clear language suitable for beginning readers, this explains the Earth's cycles of rotation, which cause the shifts between day and night and the seasons, as well as the moon's varying shape. Straightforward, realistic watercolor illustrations alternate between scenes of seasonal activity on Earth (riding a bike, raking leaves, sledding) and powerful, deep blue spreads of outer space. Direct, simple, and ideal for classroom support, this appealing introduction to Earth's movement remains narrowly focused on its topic, so children learning about space for the first time may want to supplement this with other books that show Earth within the larger solar system. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, readable book for curious young children, November 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Earth Cycles (Paperback)
This book does an excellent job explaining to young children why it gets dark at night, why there are seasons, and similar information. It is more of a picture-book than an encyclopedia, presented at a pace appropriate for reading aloud. My three year old learned the pattern of days, months, years and seasons from the book, and wants to read it over and over.

I wish more science books for young children were written this way!
