4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Game, Takes Time to Learn March 8, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Verified Purchase
Im mainly an online RPG gamer and was interested in this game due to the RPG elements such as equipment upgrade and 4 distinct classes. Theres so much this game does right but it also has several flaws. Ill start off by talking about the game itself and then the pros and cons as I see them.

In this game you choose one of four classes and kill bugs. Thats the entire game. There arent hundereds of different types of bugs, but the variety is enough to engage the player. Instead of being one long fluid game with check-points, its mission based meaning after each mission you get to upgrade your character and continue the game. You can also repeat the mission or do previous missions. Given that there are a grand total of 85 missions and 4 characters, your looking at 340 missions worth of gameplay. Add in the 5 difficulties and your at 1700 missions; though to be fair, you most likely wont be playing through every difficulty. This brings up another positive aspect of the game - you can switch to any difficulty at any time. Want to start the game on the hardest? Go for it, you wont beat the first mission, but the options available letting the player decide how steep they want to grade the difficulty. Armor and weapon upgrades are found by killing enemies and picking them up - the same weapons are found on the same levels. The only downside is once all the enemies are dead, the mission ends even if there are weapons lying around so you better be picking up upgrades as your playing.

The classes are also balanced and equally fun to play, though its smart to stick with one class and complete at least half the missions to get a feel before trying out another.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some very intense and epic battles to be experience here. February 22, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Verified Purchase
Earth Defense Force 2025 continues the series on the PS3 by offering new weapons, characters and abilities against familiar foes, including giant Ants, Spiders, UFO Ships, Giant Robots, Monsters and more. What separates this series from the competition is the epic, intense and overwhelming scale of battle, where if you're not constantly moving, strafing and blasting away at the enemy, your character is probably deceased. Picture exploring an open city, landscape or village, and in the distance, hundreds of Giant Ants appear, heading right towards your direction. Load up your high Tech Machine Gun and Rocket Launcher, and prepare for battle through each intense stage.

+Some of the most epic and intense "One vs All" battles in a video game.
+Pick from Four Characters, change their costume color, weapons.
+The Jet Pack character (Female human) has the best flight in the series allowing for longer and higher flight like never before. Right from the start.
+Open Maps in each level. Though there are invisible walls (no more red walls as in EDF:IA), the open world maps are much, much larger and filled with detailed buildings, cars, streets, trees, stores, skyscrapers to ascend, mountains, rivers, oceans and more.
+You can swim freely.
+Great controls, though the new layout takes some getting used to with the button layouts. Adjustable? Yes.
+Massive amounts of enemies fill the screen. You against an army.
+If you loved the prior games, this delivers more of the same with some improvements.
+Massive explosions when the enemy ships or robots are defeated.
+Easy, Normal, Hard, Inferno difficulties offer different rewards and new weapons.
+A fun, thrilling experience that doesn't take itself seriously.

3.0 out of 5 stars Local Co-op Frame Rate Issues March 24, 2014
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3
My son and I loved the previous one, but this one sufferes big time from frame rate issues while playing split-screen co-op. It's still playable, still fun as both of my boys love playing against one another, but once the action starts heating up, that's when the frame rate really dips.

Someone mentioned an update, but no update was available to download. Normally as long as you're sign into the PSN network when putting in the game, it'll automatically make you download the update for the game, but this isn't the case so I have no idea what the previous reviewer is talking about "an update".

We'll still finish it and we'll still have fun with it but even though I didn't expect great graphics, I still would have liked it to be like the previous one that didn't suffer the same way when playing co-op.

**UPDATE (Day Six)**

I've decided to put this update at the top since I'm at the point where I'm cautiously bumping my rating up to three stars. The online portion is feeling a bit more stable lately. We still get the occasional dropped game or dropped player, but it has gotten to the point where we can actually play for an hour without issue.

The graphical lag is still very much a part of EDF. When the game spews a giant nest's worth of ants at you, or fills the sky with fliers, the PS3 drops the framerate like a rock. It's not quite as bad (yet) as I remember in Insect Armageddon on the 360 (where the heavy's black-contrail'd rocket launchers would nearly lock up the screen - 3 seconds per frame, instead of the other way around), but I don't think I've gotten the most ridiculous weapons yet, or made it to inferno (currently farming hard for weapons/armor). Tip: Turn off screen shake in the options. It makes the game a lot more playable. This game is screaming for a PC port, the consoles simply can't handle the amount of data EDF is trying to throw at it. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any plans in place to make this happen (at least not yet).

As the game stands, the multiplayer is getting much more stable. We still have the random game where a group member doesn't load and we have to retreat/reload, or the game locks up during load/saves, but they're becoming much more rare. I'd say it's affecting maybe 1 mission in 15, where before it was 1 in 3. If the stability keeps getting better, I'd be more than willing to give this game four stars.

**Original review below**

I've been looking forward to EDF2025 for almost a year now, waiting with bated breath while the release date got pushed further and further back.
