Book Description

From bowling pins to boomerangs, windsocks to waterwheels, create a world of exciting outdoor activity!

With Earth-Friendly Outdoor Fun, ordinary discarded objects find new life as imaginative ? and unique ? outdoor toys, games, and tools. Go bowling in your own backyard. Or build your own backyard barometer. Scare up a scarecrow from some old clothes and newspaper. Send a jet balloon soaring. Activities include complete step-by-step instructions and illustrations to ensure success. Best of all, you'll also learn important facts and tips about helping to save our environment through recycling.

GEORGE PFIFFNER, the author of all four books in the Earth-Friendly series, spent fourteen years creating hundreds of activities for Woman's Day and other magazines. He also designs theater sets and department store displays.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?Reusable materials, including soda bottles, Styrofoam, old clothes, cardboard, and plastic shopping bags, are the basis for making nearly cost-free items such as kites, bowling pins, and a scarecrow. Most of the projects are fairly simple; some require a bit of adult help. Pfiffner is careful to emphasize safety and endorses the "pushpin" method of cutting hard objects. His emphasis on making use of castaways may make children more aware of the need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Black-and-white diagrams illustrate the procedures. These activities will be fun on a snowy weekend or summer afternoon and may encourage children to do rather than to watch.?Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY

From the Publisher

Kids today are increasingly aware of environmental issues and want to help out in active ways. The 25 projects in this book are designed to provide fun-to-do and skills-building activities using materials that would be discarded. All the craft projects involve making things to play with outdoors including games (pick-up sticks, bowling), gardening activities (scarecrow, seed starter kit), and a kite, giant bubble maker, or a boomerang. Contains easy-to-follow instructions, open design, plenty of illustrations plus facts, and tips on how to help conserve our natural resources.
