California Crayola,

This review is from: Earth Girls Are Easy (DVD)
This movie is crayon colorful in its outlook and its sophistication. Stars Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum are joined by relative unknowns Jim Carrey and Daymon Wayans in a romp through Southern California. Puns, silliness, sex jokes (it's PG so they're not lewd), satire, and some of Julie Brown's funniest songs are highlights.
Mac (Goldblum) is captain of an alien space ship that crash lands in Valerie's (Davis) pool because of the antics of his sexually deprived side kicks Wiploc (Carrey) and Zeebo (Wayans). The three hairy spacemen cheerfully turn Valerie's life from a disaster to. . . absolute chaos. Julie Brown (Candy) and Michael McKean (Woody) steal the show with wonderful bits. When Candy wins "this month's Miss August" and sings "I'm a Blonde" listen and rewind to hear it again. It's a hoot! You won't recognize McKeen, from "Laverne and Shirley", "This is Spinal Tap" or, more recently, "A Mighty Wind." He makes a delightful Woody: the pool man with a surfing obsession and the IQ of a carrot. This DVD would be a good first step toward your own Michael McKean movie collection. I originally saw this movie in 1989 as part of a Women's Movie Festival, Brown shares author credits. "Earth Girls are Easy" is based on her song of the same name. This is the movie I watch when I want a cheer-me-up.

An Entertaining Musical Sci-fi Comedy!,
By
This review is from: Earth Girls Are Easy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Earth Girls Are Easy" is a musical sci-fi comedy about valley-girl Valerie (played by Geena Davis) living in 1980's Los Angeles, and who is engaged to a cheating, boyfriend doctor named Ted (played by Charles Rocket). Catching her boyfriend at home playing with a nurse, the disgruntled Valerie gets the surprise of her life when a spaceship crash lands in her swimming pool. The spaceship's crew (played by Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans), haven't had any "shore leave" in a long time. Not wanting to cause too much of a stir, Valerie takes the alien trio to her best friend Candy (played by Julie Brown) who owns a beauty salon. After Candy transforms the furry trio into believable human males, Valerie finds their captain, Mac (Jeff Goldblum), very attractive. Wild things happen when the alien trio are taken to a dance club and letting them drive in California traffic! The fact that this film is also a musical only adds to the humor as there are several original songs by Julie Brown! If you enjoy remembering the excesses of the 1980's and New Wave music, you will probably enjoy this film!

"I like 'em big...and stupid!",
By Sean E. Mcgrath "kierianeleison" (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews

If you like 'em that way too, then this is the movie for you!Four very strong leads - Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum and then unknown Jim Carrey and Damon Williams - backed up by Julie Brown deliver a paper-thin story with humor, bright colors and an ineffable sexiness. I think this was an attempt to revive musical-comedy cinema in the late '80s; the previous shining example being "Xanadu". The songs are original, funny and have enjoyed cult status ever since. This is one of the first movies to show that inter-planetary romances don't have to end with an ova-depositor rammed down your throat. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys turing their minds off for an hour and a half of fun.
