5.0 out of 5 stars California Crayola
This movie is crayon colorful in its outlook and its sophistication. 3.0 out of 5 stars Have some 80's nostalgia
In spite of this film being slightly annoying (partly for Geena Davis's character, partly for the tacked-on music), it has redeeming values that make it worth at least a watch, and a trip back into 80's Space.

The best parts are the hilarious Julie Brown songs, 'I Like 'Em Big and Stupid', and 'Cuz I'm a Blonde'. If the rest of the movie gets on your last nerve, just...

5.0 out of 5 stars California Crayola, August 14, 2005

This movie is crayon colorful in its outlook and its sophistication. Stars Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum are joined by relative unknowns Jim Carrey and Daymon Wayans in a romp through Southern California. Puns, silliness, sex jokes (it's PG so they're not lewd), satire, and some of Julie Brown's funniest songs are highlights.

Mac (Goldblum) is captain of an alien space ship that crash lands in Valerie's (Davis) pool because of the antics of his sexually deprived side kicks Wiploc (Carrey) and Zeebo (Wayans). The three hairy spacemen cheerfully turn Valerie's life from a disaster to. . . absolute chaos.

Julie Brown (Candy) and Michael McKean (Woody) steal the show with wonderful bits. When Candy wins "this month's Miss August" and sings "I'm a Blonde" listen and rewind to hear it again. It's a hoot! You won't recognize McKeen, from "Laverne and Shirley", "This is Spinal Tap" or, more recently, "A Mighty Wind." He makes a delightful Woody: the pool man with a surfing obsession and the IQ of a carrot. This DVD would be a good first step toward your own Michael McKean movie collection.

I originally saw this movie in 1989 as part of a Women's Movie Festival, Brown shares author credits. "Earth Girls are Easy" is based on her song of the same name. This is the movie I watch when I want a cheer-me-up.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Musical Sci-fi Comedy!, August 12, 2002
"Earth Girls Are Easy" is a musical sci-fi comedy about valley-girl Valerie (played by Geena Davis) living in 1980's Los Angeles, and who is engaged to a cheating, boyfriend doctor named Ted (played by Charles Rocket). Catching her boyfriend at home playing with a nurse, the disgruntled Valerie gets the surprise of her life when a spaceship crash lands in her swimming pool. The spaceship's crew (played by Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans), haven't had any "shore leave" in a long time. Not wanting to cause too much of a stir, Valerie takes the alien trio to her best friend Candy (played by Julie Brown) who owns a beauty salon. After Candy transforms the furry trio into believable human males, Valerie finds their captain, Mac (Jeff Goldblum), very attractive. Wild things happen when the alien trio are taken to a dance club and letting them drive in California traffic!

The fact that this film is also a musical only adds to the humor as there are several original songs by Julie Brown!

If you enjoy remembering the excesses of the 1980's and New Wave music, you will probably enjoy this film!

4.0 out of 5 stars "I like 'em big...and stupid!", September 23, 2000
This review is from: Earth Girls Are Easy (DVD)
If you like 'em that way too, then this is the movie for you!

Four very strong leads - Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum and then unknown Jim Carrey and Damon Williams - backed up by Julie Brown deliver a paper-thin story with humor, bright colors and an ineffable sexiness. I think this was an attempt to revive musical-comedy cinema in the late '80s; the previous shining example being "Xanadu". The songs are original, funny and have enjoyed cult status ever since.

This is one of the first movies to show that inter-planetary romances don't have to end with an ova-depositor rammed down your throat.

I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys turing their minds off for an hour and a half of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Say Julie!, March 30, 2002
This review is from: Earth Girls Are Easy (DVD)
I love this movie as a Julie Brown fan, so this review will be pretty Julie-centric. The DVD is definitely worth it! For starters, when it came out on vhs "formatted to fit your screen," they did a really poor job--you'd hear Julie's voice talking but she wouldn't be in the shot. The DVD is widescreen and so that problem's taken care of; it makes a big difference! It's noticeably cleaned up too; the Blonde sequence always looked bad, and really old on vhs, but now it looks new again. And the best bits are the extras, including the deleted scenes, which are all scenes starring--That's right, Miss Julie Brown! Also included is the musical sequence they filmed but never used, Julie's "I Like `Em Big And Stupid." You won't find a better source of Julie Brown music videos than right here!

3.0 out of 5 stars Have some 80's nostalgia, April 7, 2003

In spite of this film being slightly annoying (partly for Geena Davis's character, partly for the tacked-on music), it has redeeming values that make it worth at least a watch, and a trip back into 80's Space.

The best parts are the hilarious Julie Brown songs, 'I Like 'Em Big and Stupid', and 'Cuz I'm a Blonde'. If the rest of the movie gets on your last nerve, just skip to the Julie Brown songs, and it will be worth the price you paid! It's too bad much of the editing that took place for the movie took out Julie stuff, which is why you should get the DVD, to have access to the deleted scenes.

Other highlights are a delicious and silent Jeff Goldblum, and Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans, when you knew them when. Also check out the always-appealing Michael McKean as a pool-cleaning Surf Bum.

Combine all that with lots of 80's color and glam, and you've got a fun little trip on their alien ship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah yes, the 80s, January 22, 2003
This review is from: Earth Girls Are Easy (DVD)
As I sat down to be exposed to Earth Girls are Easy for the first time, I prepared myself for some of the most painful cinematography known to man. Little did I know, I was about to be exposed to one of the most delightfully entertaining and funny movies I have ever seen.

Geena Davis, Jim Carey, Jeff Goldblum and Damon Wayans took a script destined for disaster and somehow created a masterpiece in its own right. The aliens, the musicals, the outlandish props and stupid plot all combined to create one amazingly entertaining movie. It is amazing to see the actors that I mentioned when they were much younger and barely known in the industry, and to see them take such a weird movie to such a high level really displays their raw talent and shows why they eventually make it so big in the industry.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone wanting to see or show something different, bizarre and totally fun. It certainly is not an ordinary or normal movie, but then again, it was the 80s.

This is a quite funny movie which strangely many people are not familiar with. Jim Carrey has a small role as well, and you see hints as to why he became such a big star in "physical comedies." Geena Davis plays a 20 something "Valley Girl", living with her boyfriend, when a spaceship crashes into her backyard swimming pool. She and her best friend befriend "eventually" human looking three men, who have various adventures in the Valley. Geena Davis spends quite a bit of the movie in a bikini which is not hard on the eyes either. Really, a very funny movie.
