I am both a landscape architect and an archaeologist, and the theories behind the idea of what makes places sacred or lose that sacredness makes up what one might call "European Feng Shui." This book should be required for those interested in Europe's version of "Sacred Location" and place design with the "Anima Loci" (Spirit of Place) always to be kept in mind. This is a living tradition. Pennick's books are always well-researched and wonderfully illustrated. This book is a gem, and I haven't come across anything like it. I hope he does some more work along these lines, especially in ways to apply these concepts to protecting and respecting places of power. I give it five stars for the excellent content and illustrations, but my copy had some problems with ink fading and smears, and the book design as far as text layout etc. should be rethought out for clarity, which brings it down to four stars.
