What is your favorite wild animal? There are many to choose from. "Lions, and tigers, and bears, Oh my!" But ants? This third and final installment in Dawn Publications' "Earth Heroes" series focuses on eight people who determined their favorite wild animal and then dedicated their lives to studying and protecting it. William Temple Hornaday rescued the American buffalo or bison from extinction. Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling was called the duck's best friend. Rachel Carson sought to save all wild animals from the effects of DDT by her warnings. Roger Tory Peterson was the world's foremost birder. Ronald "RD" Lawrence became a friend to the wolf. Edward O. Wilson is known as the "Lord of the Ants." Jane Goodall has made a lifelong study of chimpanzees. And Iain, Oria, and Saba Douglas-Hamilton are working to help elephants in Africa.
The Malnors wrote the first book in the series, Earth Heroes: Champions of the Wilderness, and, of course, a large number of wild animals live in the wilderness. Many wild animals also live in the oceans, and the second book in the series is Earth Heroes: Champions of the Ocean, written by Fran Hodgkins. As is true with the other two books, each chapter of Earth Heroes: Champions of Wild Animals has a page of fast facts about the individual under consideration and a timeline to help put that person's life and work into a historical context. There is also a section at the end on how young people can "become a hero" for wild animals today. In addition, lesson plans for each book in the "Earth Heroes" series along with suggestions for using them are available for teachers and homeschool parents at Dawn Publication's website under "Teaching Tools." Nearly everyone likes animals in one way or another, and Champions of Wild Animals is a great book for the "budding scientist" that resides in all children.

Children love learning about animals. They want to know what kind of animals exist, where they come from, what they eat and most importantly what they look like. The Malnor's have put together a collection of animal activists who have been studying, drawing, photographing and protecting animals for many years. This series introduces heroes like William Hornaday who saved the American buffalo from extinction, Jay Darling who saved North American duck and waterfowl populations, Rachel Carson who was one of the most influential environmentalist of her time, Jane Goodall who pioneered in chimpanzee research and the Douglas-Hamilton Family who conducted ground breaking studies of elephants, to name a few. Readers will learn how passionate these people were about animals. Each segment highlights these activists journey to helping animals be safe from harm and extinction. Photos and drawings give the reader an inside view and a better understanding of each animal. After each chapter there is a list of facts and historical context about each person featured. Readers who love animals can learn intimate details about these activists and their causes. In the back of the book is a guide of how to become a hero like the environmentalist featured. This is an excellent way for parents and teachers to introduce children to the world of animals, how they can get involved and how they can become one of the heroes who devote their lives to protect them and share them with the world

This is book two in this series of books. I have read the first two to our 14 year old, 8 year old and 6 year old daughters and all of us were glued to every fascinating true story of how these heroes of nature came to make such important contributions to our world. We purchased the first book in the series after our own family wilderness adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota and what a wonderful way to take what we experienced home with us and relate to some very famous influential people! The Malnors have a wonderful style of writing that is very engaging to any age reader (they also wrote Champions of the Wilderness, the first book in this series) making facts entertaining and interesting and giving the reader the inspiration to go and be an Earth Hero! Every middle school should have these books in there library collection as that age is hungry for direction and this might just be what lights the fire of a future Rachel Carson or Ding Darling!
