Now more than ever our planet needs Earth Heroes. This eloquent book takes us on a journey through the personal lives of the most renowned naturalists, describing their lasting influence on the world. The passion and profound impact of the heroes of yesterday will inspire the young to be our leaders tomorrow. --Richard Louv, author, Last Child in the Woods

Earth Heroes skillfully brings to life the lives of great environmentalists in a fresh and moving way. You can feel their idealism and reverence for life in the stories of these remarkable men and women. to love and care for it --Joseph Cornell, author, Sharing Nature with Children

REVIEWED BY: Wayne S. Walker, reviewer with Stories for Children Magazine

Who do you think can be considered a hero or a champion? In Earth Heroes: Champions of the Wilderness, authors Bruce and Carol L. Malnor introduce us to eight "Earth heroes" who have done things to preserve the environment and are thus "champions of the wilderness" because they have protected wild places around the world. Some of the names will be fairly familiar, such as Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt. But you may not recognize others like Richard St. Barbe Baker, Margaret Murie, and Wangari Maathai. We often think of Teddy Roosevelt charging up San Juan Hill as a Rough Rider or speaking softly but carrying a big stick as President. But did you know that as child he was "sickly and delicate" due to asthma and that he "was home-schooled by tutors"?

Everyone undoubtedly recognizes the need for young people today to be concerned about protecting the environment. One great way to accomplish this goal is by looking at the real-life examples of others who did what they could to help the causes of conservation and preservation. The eight biographical sketches in this book are fascinating reading, as they first focus on the childhood events and early experiences that shaped the subjects' lives and influenced them to care about the environment and then describe the lasting contributions that they made.

The black-and-white illustrations by Anisa Claire Hovemann that are based on careful research are a perfect complement to the highly readable text. There are also several photographs, and each entry has a page of fast facts and a timeline of important events to give perspective.

This is book one in this series of books. I have read the first two to our 14 year old, 8 year old and 6 year old daughters and all of us were glued to every fascinating true story of how these heroes of nature came to make such important contributions to our world. We purchased this book after our own family wilderness adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota and what a wonderful way to take what we experienced home with us and relate to some very famous influential people! The Malnors have a wonderful style of writing that is very engaging to any age reader (they also wrote Champions of Wild Animals, the second book in this series) making facts entertaining and interesting and giving the reader the inspiration to go and be an Earth Hero! Every middle school should have these books in there library collection as that age is hungry for direction and this might just be what lights the fire of a future Rachel Carson or Ding Darling!

Format: Paperback
There were some things I liked about this book: it is well-written, nicely presented, has charming, accessible drawings, and brings attention to our world's desperate need for conservation. But it has one major flaw, and that leads me to write this critical review.

All but one of the book's subjects (Thoreau being the exception) have children, and several, even amongst the more modern subjects who supposedly live their lives as "heroes" for mother earth, have multiple children -- three, five, six! If these people really cared so much about saving our planet and making it livable for tomorrow they would chill out on making babies and instead do something about overpopulation. They would stop sending kids the messages that it's okay for us to continue reproducing like rabbits.

If it sounds like I have an axe to grind, well, I do. I love our planet, I care about our future, and to the best of my ability I'm using my axe to chop down the invasive, weedy lies that are crippling our beautiful trees of truth.
