Editorial Reviews

Review

"Earth, Inc. shows, in a very enlightening yet practical way, how companies can create real and lasting value by working toward a sustainable destination that is informed by the existing laws of our biosphere. In doing so, Dr. Unruh has managed to write a very valuable book that is an essential addition to the sustainability practitioner’s toolbox." - Bill Morrissey, VP, Environmental Sustainability, The Clorox Company

"Earth, Inc. provides counterintuitive management lessons and a practical blueprint to address sustainability. It will also help you build credibility for your sustainability investments." - Ryan Schuchard, Manager, Environmental Research & Innovation, BSR

"Gregory Unruh's "biosphere rules", his notion of a "value cycle" and his prescription of embeddedness will change the way we think of sustainability in business. Building a sustainable global economy is one of the most crucial challenges of our time and the answers, as it turns out, were staring us in the face." - Angel Cabrera, President, Thunderbird School of Global Management

The financial gravy train will meet the end of the line eventually; it's just a matter of when. "Earth, Inc.: Using Nature's Rules to Build Sustainable Profits" is a guide to environmentally responsible business that works with nature to create a business that works with nature to keep both the environment and nature around them to be renewable and at a constant. Sustainability is the message and Gregory Unruh plays it well. "Earth, Inc." is a choice pick and solidly recommended read that shouldn't be missed for any environmentally conscious business leader.

If your new to sustainability, or new to the concept that creating a sustainable strategy is also a competitive advantage, this book is worth reading. Those with extensive experience with this megatrend may find the book a bit light at times with ideas and concepts, however, professor Unruh does add new insights and makes a strong business case that may help promote how and eco-friendly sustainable strategy will make a difference to both the top and bottom line--and our world.

As a sustainability professional I'm usually a bit skeptical about sustainability books, so I was pleasantly surprised as I tore through Earth, Inc.

Greg Unruh takes the field forward from the seminal works that came before and delivers on his promise of providing a how-to manual to environmental sustainability. Most powerful are the numerous case studies, many of which are from personal correspondence with the professionals involved, from which Unruh has tested and refined his framework. Even when Unruh revisits standard cases, he updates the old wisdom with a new and honest look.

I teach sustainable business courses as an adjunct professor at a leading business school, and after searching for three years for a book to assign my MBA students, I've chosen Earth, Inc. Unruh lays bare the secrets to sustainable innovation in clear language that any businessperson can appreciate. If you're thinking of getting into the sustainability field or just cashing in on this new innovation best-practice, Earth, Inc. is your bible. You'll emerge from its pages feeling proud of your commitment, confident in your next steps, and even optimistic for the future of humanity.

Update: my students this semester found it quite useful, and a good read.

Unruh asserts that it isn't only possible make the switch to sustainability, that it's cost-effective too. He is an advocate for a basic cradle-to-grave method of manufacturing, which takes into account the entire life cycle of the product before it is made. A lot of examples here of companies who have adopted this philosophy, with huge cost savings. I would recommend this to entrepreneurs or business owners who have considered more renewable and eco-friendly practices but who haven't implemented them yet.

Sustainability? Gregory Unruh says plan for it, "embed it and forget it!" Unruh codifies five rules that nature follows for efficient productivity in the biosphere and illustrates how these rules can work for business. He explains how to rethink "product platforms" and how to maximize the benefits of waste streams. getAbstract recommends this quick read for inspiration on finding your company's next surge in profits: earnings based on ecologically sustainable practices. As a bonus, these rules also boost your triple bottom line.
